I never leave my filters on during a water change, I turn them on when the tank is full...
Why Turn the filter off:confused: ? I always thought that by leaving my filter on would circulate and mix in the new water better. It also helps to regulate the water temp??? Doesnt it??

well chlorine from the new water could kill some of the BB in your filters and I also always go past the intakes.

The chemicals shouldn't be necessary to keep your fish alive as long as you have established a proper environment. Anything that can be done naturally is, in the long run, better and healthier for your fish.

I hate to sound like a dick, but you keep going on about this.... but people have been using dechlorinators for many many years with no ill effects what so ever, not to mention I dont have space to age 100gals+ of water for any amount of time...

MY mistake...I assumed this was a place to share differing expierances and opinions but I see the only proper responce is to "go with the flow..."

I don't quote others...nor comment directly on their responces. In fact I can't seem to remember ever stating that other methouds are bad or wrong.. I belive I posted that the reason for most of the precautions my wife and I take is because of the rapidly deterioating state of the municable water supplies all over the US.

If you have fantastic tap water where you live..then more power to you...If you havn't tested it then you should...it's an eye opening experance.

I test my tap water before a water change with test strips, I know they are not to be trusted but if nothing changes then I dont have to verify with my liquid test kit, and I never have a reading for ammonia or nitrates.

Normal around here is...

ammonia.... 1.0 (Basicly high enough to fishless cycle a tank with.)
TDS... 480 (500 is concidered acceptable by the FDA)

And Riverside is NOT concidered one of the worst places in the US for water by far. Most additives nutralize rather than remove so I stay away from them.

they neutralize rather then remove so the beneficial bacteria in the filters can still feed off the ammonia and what not while it doesnt harm the fish.
