above ground pool

wont the pond plant roots go through the sides of the pool it is a intex. also i was thinking about using the pool pump to pump the water would that work?

It really depends on how many gph the pump is rated at. you should have at least a 10x per hr turn over.

you wont be getting 10x per hour, large pools/ponds dont operate on the same basis as tanks.
4x turnover for a large tank is very good.
For a pool like that i would expect twice per hour would be good-most out door ponds work on once every hour or two-massive turnover alone is not the way ,you need a large volume of filter media in your sump-i would suggest you use the pump that comes with it as just a back-up to keep the water moving, then get a pond pump that turns your volume of water over twice or more per hour this will lift the water out of the pool to pass through the sump and gravity returns the water to the pool.
it is also an idea to add an air pump to add extra oxygen to the system.
Also look in the diy and pool/pond sections on site.
Hope that helps.

I still suggest shooting for 10x per hr if your going to have those fish. I have 10k per hr on my 1500 so I didn't quite get there but I couldn't imagine having only 1x per hr with large catfish

I agree with the amount per hour. Mine turns about 13 times and hour and the filter becomes filthy. I only have a 700 gallon and a 50 gallon trash can sump. I literally have to clean my filter and socks once a week and replace the filter socks and filter pads every 2 weeks. If I don't clean it it will clog up and overflow. It takes a lot of work to keep it clean. I would suggest two large pumps and two separate filters instead of one large one. i think it will work better and they might not clog as fast.

thanx for all the info you guys. would the pool pump be turning over enough water? derekp how did you build you 50gallon sump????

Its in my signature. I found a used pump online that pushed near 10,000 gph. It only cost me $230 with free shipping. Which is pretty cheap as far as nice pumps go. I just wish I would have built two different sumps now because one gets so extremely filthy in a short amount of time it is almost overwhelming.

I have two of those 1,000 gallon above ground pool setups and if you are talking about those pumps then no. Those pumps are made to filter a pool that is only used for an hour or so, where as you will be using it constantly. Id suggest looking for either a 10,000 gph pump or a couple of 5,000 gph pumps.

50g sump is too small, you need massive area for filter media with fish that big, it doesnt matter if you pass the water through 10 times per second if there is not enough media for the bacteria to colonise and break down protein waste.
As long as oxygen levels are high enough then massive turnover will not help biological filtration much-i like high turnover for my tanks but you need volume to keep water healthy-high turnover will help with clarity not water quality.
My advice would be to get a 200-250 gal koi vat (rectangular) mount it on some concrete blocks and use the overflows to return the water to the pool.
