above ground pool

The stock pump that comes with the Intex pools is not nearly enough to filter for life. Very short term only and is more to keep some flow in the pool, not actually filter. Also based on the fiting you probably couldn't rig a decent pump to that outlet on the pond. Most likely you'll need to keep that stock pump hooked up even if its not running to clog the intake hole that the pool has and then just route your new pump piping over the sides. I would think that 6000-10000gph is enough if you are only planning on keeping those two species. I would also recommend a dual pump configuration in case one fails that way you have at least some flow/filtration just in case of failure.

I think you are getting a lot of info based on small set ups - which you don't have.
When it comes to large water bodies, you need to change the approach. You won't need massive turnover. In fact on REALLY big set ups, you'll be lucky to see once an hour - but it doesn't matter.

I'd run a 1 hp pool pump pushing into one good sized sand filter (bead filter) for mechanical and biological filtration. If you wanta second, add a 1/4 pump just to pull from the pool and return to it. No need for external sumps and all that other junk. If anything, look into returning the supply into a big biotower / degas column. It will give you extra biological, help keep your O2 levels up and give you a spot to burn off excess CO2 from the animals you have.

If you want, give me your budget and I can put together a full set up for you.
