Ive used these on and off for years for floor level tanks / grow out ponds, always called them gravity filters or upflow filter. On a garden pond they are very common, just not in the same shape of course. Similar to the one in this link. http://pixelriver.tripod.com/Filter/filter.htm
They work great, and in an aquarium set upwith an undergravel filter you can run the intake hose into the updraft tube of an undergravel filter and draw the water from the bottom if so desired. Rubber Maid type storage bins are handy for this if you are a DIYer. I have found it is best to keep the pump in the filter itself and out of the tank if at all possible.
