But they can't.

Hypothetical question for you, it's not a bad analogy actually, and one that you can address, on behalf of the fish.

At the moment you're free to roam the world. If you had to go to prison for the rest of your life and you had a choice of prison to be sent to, would you choose a prison the size of a palace or the size of of a back garden shed?

Both are pretty rubbish really given that you could once roam the whole world, but given the choice surely you'd chose the palace.

But wait, they're both the same aren't they!!!

How can you compare a highly intelligent being like a human to a fish?
At the end of the day I'm trapped inside 4 walls ,what difference does it make?

ive said it before...ill say it again... “ a fish in a box... is just a fish in a box” ??‍♂️... its really as simple as that. Im an “old timer” these days myself. From the “glass banger era”.. ive had tanks u can swim in comfortably, I’ve had bettas in cups. Logically whats the difference? Scale...Both scenarios are still fish in “captivity” instead of the wild.

if u think ur “ethically correct” for however it is u keep fish ur lying to urself. Its not accepting everything. Its accepting YOU yourself are doing the same thing. You boomers have a hard time looking in the mirror ?. Remember the old thread “grenade”... we all play the same game of keeping tanks and there a ticking time bomb. Power outages, equipment failures etc... things are out of our control even in the best case scenario. If ur an oldie u should know “logically” things happen and have lived through and dealt with it. As i said earlier some play the game better than others but in the end... its still the same game.

I enjoy keeping one fish in a 300-1,000 gal “box” with automated systems... im no better than the kid with a gold fish in a bowl. Whats the difference?

Always refreshing to have yet another open-minded New Age Man tell me yet again how all we boomers are the same, simply because we see things differently than you do. :)

I'm not questioning the ethicality of fish-keeping. As shocking as it may be to hear this, I do "look in the mirror" regularly and examine my own actions wiIIth a critical eye. There are plenty of things that I won't do because they don't sit right with me; and, yes, after 5+ decades of fish-keeping, I'm sure I've made more mistakes and killed more fish than many here have. But the key thing is that one must strive to grow and learn and improve.

You as a keeper are no more or less ethical keeping one monster to the best of your ability utilizing the skill and knowledge you possess after years of practice...than the kid with a goldfish bowl, who is also doing the best job of it that his level of skill and knowledge allow.

And both of you are worlds ahead of an adult "educator" who...after 5 years, according to the OP...keeps this assortment of fish in a tank this size. He obviously knew next to nothing when he set it up...he has apparently not bothered to learn much more in that half-decade...and he is entrusted with teaching kids the art of critical thinking, i.e. science. I'm just not progressive enough to accept that. :)

If those approaches are "all the same", then apparently the Engliish language has changed much more drastically since my school days than I had realized; here I was thinking that the word "you" was now spelled "u" but everything else was pretty much the same...but I guess not...:)

jjohnwm jjohnwm .... good points and well said... seems im stuck on the “ethics” bit. Seems like we agree on more than i thought also. I try to wind it down to the simplest principle “fish in a box”, but u are correct, there can be more to it than that. Repeating the same thing over and over is just insanity...or stupidity... theres always something to learn... even from a crotchety old timer ??. Im not that young to ingnore or not respect that. caught somewhere in the middle i guess ??‍♂️. I enjoy my fish in a box, accept that “ethically” its a game to play with life, but also dont want that privilege taken away so i support “the hobby” good or bad...people in it keeps the cycle/buisness going... Is it worse knowing what ur doing “like us” or... being the uneducated educator blind to it all haha?
