AC vs. Whisper: Why Whisper sucks.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe, but it was just a regular employee. I honestly did not know if one was better than the other. AquaClear was just the one I noticed first. The whisper seems to be working ok though. Today I replaced the carbon in the bio bag with fluval biomax.

I've had bad experiences with LFS before. I just don't learn my lesson well. In fact this same store, when it was under different ownership, almost screwed me on a malaysian box turtle(they had it set up like a land box turtle). After I did some research, I know I should have done this first, I found out that they were aquatic and returned it. They told me that they wouldn't let me return anymore animals(this was my first return).

I think I had a AquaClear when I used to have a blue crayfish. This was back in the fourth grade(I'm almost 22 now), so I can't remember how well it ran. I don't remember having any problems though.

I have AC's and a Whisper 60, TetraTec 300 & 500. They all do the same job of mechanical filtering, housing bacteria, and moving large amounts of water.

I prefer the cartridge filter Whisper and TetraTec for the easy of cleaning. They all have sponge filters for bio; in fact the TetraTec 500 has a larger sponge than the AC110. The TetraTec's also have a wet/dry bio chamber, so they may produce more BB than the ACs. But the big difference is that they have cartridge filters "before" the sponge (and not under it), so the sponges rarely have to be cleaned. In fact I have not cleaned the bio-sponges in over a year. For filter maintenance, all I do is swap out the cartridge filters; quick, easy, and virtually no mess.

For the ACs I have to siphon water in a bucket, pull the media tray out, rinse the sponges, empty the bucket; and if I am not doing a water change at the same time, I have to mix a bit of tap water and Prime to refill the tank. The amount of water mess between the two types is like night & day.

For me the Whispers and TetraTec win hands down!

One more advantage for the Whisper 60; it fits in the 2 3/4" space behind my tank. The TetraTec's require a lot of behind tank space like the ACs.

HUH???????

Why are you siphoning the water out of the filter?.. just pull the try out and pull the sponge... rise and reverse the process... it takes longer to rinse the sponge then it does to get it out AND put it back... Use your siphon to clean the bottom of the holding tank and your in business... no water needed in my sponge cleanings...

I've used Whisper HOB in the past and always hated cleaning and replacing cartridges. When I got my first canister filter I used the HOB Whisper just to move water. I'll have to try AC HOBs in the future.
