ac110, i'm dissapointed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
have to say that I just recently got my AC and like it much more than my Whisper or my Marineland BioWheel.

No offense to the traditional Filters like AC 110.. but I dont recommend these filters for tanks larger than 50 gallon..

About some 8 yrs ago my dad invested in one of these cost about 75 at the time... they are good to a certain extend.. they crack.... and the pump heads sometimes gets worn out and useless...

I highly recommend Canister Filters.. Much more reliable.. My old Eheim 2213 was given to me by my uncle... and they still have existing parts for these canister filters.... I also own a Eheim 2236 awesome filters!

I agree that a good canister will blow an AC out of the water..

but we are comparing apples to oranges then.

the AC's are considerably cheaper than a good quality canister.

for the money, the AC's are tough to beat..

are ac 110's hang on or internal or what

Mine was ok. I had the same issue with the media floating up, not because of air, but because of the water flow. I ended up putting a small rock on top of mine.

I also havn't used my ac110 in almost a year now I think. It doesn't work any more....

My sisters dog ate the media basket and the foam. Now im thinking of what I could turn it into. Maybe a Algae scrubber.. :)

There really is someone else on this forum that sees the negitive sides of the filter too?????? I AM NOT ALONE!

Canisters will blow the AC110 sky high. Why they are being used as an "extra" filter when the main tank is being filtered by one or more canisters is beyond me. Then, the member with two canisters and 1 or 2 ac110s comes and tells us how his water stats a great, even though the canisters are doing 95% of the work.

I agree, a good canister is nothing compared to an AC.

you got it backwards. Swap "good canister" with "an AC" and that will be correct haha :)

I wouldn't say its compairing a rolls to a honda. Reason is a honda can get much better fuel millage than a rolls and they are cheaper to work on along with a bunch of other things.

The AC110 IS a good filter for the right tank. Unfortunatly, they are being thrown on tanks WAY to large for their real world capacity.

AC110s are better than canisters in the following ways;
- Documented Flow Volume is much closer to the Actual Flow Volume.
- They CAN be easier to maintain in certain circumstances
- The power consumption is considerably less than a canister filter
- Its less likley to empty a whole tank of water on the floor due to a seal failure. There is only one seal on the AC110 that is hardly ever disturbed that could cause this issue.

A good canister is better than AC110s in the following ways;
- Bio Capacity is MUCH greater. Even my fluval 304 (which has been running for 10+ years) holds more bio media.
- Flow velocity through media is less.
- Can hold more debris in mechanical filtration
- Can be quieter, especially when the water level drops.
- Less Mess around the tank when cleaning.
- Intake and Output location in the tank can be placed anywhere.
- Can have a tank with a sand bottom without worrys.

I could go on with both. Both of them serve a purpose in different areas but when it comes to quality and performance, canisters are the way to go.

yeah i have no problems with mine. if anything its super quiet. plus it makes my 90 g nice and clear. i would take it back and exchange it. plus it should have the manufactuarers warranty on it. exchange it and see how it goes. i tossed my bio wheel for a ac110 nothing but good things

I agree,its an ok filter but is more difficult to deal with than an emperor 400.The big basket is sloppy to pull out to clean.The housings are very thin plastic.Never self restart after a waterchange.Ive had the sponges rise while running and spill water all over the floor.Stupid little plastic cam to hold the filter at the correct angle is a pita.
The emp 400s restart every time,media is easy to deal with and customize.Housings are thicker plastic.Just an all around better machine.

Untill you have to take the carbon out to medicate your tank, Then you lose your mechanical and chemical filtration. Aslo the tubes the spray the water on the bio wheel seem to get clogged non stop. I threw my 400 away and bought a few ac110's. Don't regret it at all.

Seems like the ones coming from petsmart are junk. I have one thati s 10 years old and is queit and runs great. I bought a new one for my 50 gallon this week and took two back already because of a noisy impellar. The one on the 50 now seems o.ok. so far. I think the new ones being maufactured are not as good as the old ones of a few years ago. Maybe lousy quality control or something as was already said.
