Hi all, this is my first post here so hello everyone!
I am going to be setting up a 55 gallon with 4 juvenile red bellied piranhas, and a 4 inch albino chocolate pleco, and I need to get a new filter for it since I only have an undergravel filter for it and I am going to be putting sand in. I was looking at the aquaclear filters since I don’t have the cash for a canister filter. Should I definitely get a AC110 (500 GPH) or could I get away with having a AC70 (300 GPH)? I know that piranhas are messy and I can afford a AC110, but being in college I don’t have a huge excess of money laying around. What are your thoughts? Thanks for the help!

I have an ac70 that I got on craigslist cheap, it gets the job done, I had it on my 55 for quite some time but most often the ac70s arent much cheaper than the 110s so I'd say go with the 110, theyre supposed to be one of the best HOBs

Ok thanks for the help. Another question would be, would two ac70's be fairly noisy or would it just be better to get one ac110. The ac70's are only 6w as opposed to the ac110's 16w. Really it isn't that big of a money deal i'll just keep my eyes open for a deal. Thanks again!

my ac70 is really quiet, couldnt tell you about the 110s though as i do not own one. sounds to me like most hobs are pretty quiet though

They both make the same noise . I would go with a 70 then add another later on like papawood said. 2 70's is more of a turnover rate than 1 110 for less hydro.

Ya i think i might do that. $45 shipped for a new one is pretty good i think. I'll check some shops in my area out today and see what i find also. Maybe they will match. Thanks for the help all!

if yourre going to sleep anywhere near your tank, dont get the 70 or 110. they are LOUD at night. get 2 ac50s. i tried them all.
