AC110 or AC70 for a 55g?

Just get the 110 and you will be done to keep the noise down make sure your water level is always up. That way it's pretty much silent

Go with the 110. It only runs 14W not 16W. The filter compartment is close to twice the size of the 70. The GPH is not the end all as far as filtration, and this provides twice the biological filter then the 70 does.

I have every model of AC running in one of my 14 tanks. I have to disagree with everyone so far. The smaller the impellor on the AC's the noisier the filter.

If you are useing a sand subtrate, please make sure that you rig a very fine makeshift intake cover as to not suck sand into the impellor. This is where the worst noise will come into play.

If you decide to go with a 70 it would be a good idea to couple it with a biological sponge filter, which are failry cheap (Well under $10).

I would never steer anyone away from an AC110, but I always like redundancy... For my money, it would either be dual AC70's, or one AC110 loaded with mechanical media & one AC50 loaded with biomedia. Sooner or later you will have to clean the filter & having 2 of them lets you stagger the cleanings to avoid a mini-cycle. I agree with screaminleeman, too; a sponge filter would work just as well for the redundancy.

AC110 definitely. one of the best filters on the market. excellent filtration, silent operation, and many years of reliability. Can't go wrong.
Also, if cleaned properly (as with any filter) you run no risk of losing your bacteria. There is absolutely no 'need' for a second filter. However iif you wanted more circulation in the tank, you can either look in to a small powerhead or just do a little custom plumbing. (*see the link in my sig)

^^^^......I like having 2 filters on my tanks, so when I want to clean one I can avoid putting extra stress on the tank.

I've found that the AC70's seem underpowered. I almost always have a little air bubble at the top if the intake U that just won't go away. Never have that problem with the 110's.
