AC110 or AC70 for a 55g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Definitely go with the AC110....

Like said above, keep the water level up and they are quiet, and have MUCH more capacity than the AC70.
Another thing is if you upgrade in the future to a larger tank (75gal or greater) the AC110 will fit over the rim.... the AC70 will not.

Oh.... and that pleco is going to have a hard time with the piranhas...

i agree. actual flow of ac 70 is 170gph and 110 is closer 300gph. id keep the 70 and add a 110, if you have room. be like a 9x turnover rate, keep it nice and clean.

The Aquaclear 110 has a max output of 500 gph and the Aquaclear 70 has a max output of 300 gph. They used to call the Aquaclear 110 a 500 and they used to call the Aquaclear 70 a 300.

most if not all filters end up with about 60% to 70% of the rated flow. the pumps are rated to flow those # but after u add media or filters it reduces them greatly then add gravity. this is vary common with canisters especially. i have a flow meter on 1 of my ehiem 2080 that is rated for 450gph and even after i clean it it only flows 280gph. ask around or do a search and you will find the same info. i cant say if it is true for a sump setup but i assume their is some loss.

well my figures may not be excact, but im 90% sure they are close. i know for a fact the that a fluval fx5 is rated for 900gph and full of media only flows 500gph and i know an ac110 doesnt flow anywhere near an fx5.

http://biotope.multiply.com/reviews/item/2 fx5 and 2080 ehiem tests.

i can find an actual test of ac110.

i was just taking in the 60-70% average flow rates which may lean towards canisters then hob's.

I got my figures from Hagen the company that makes Aquaclear. Guess you can argue with them about it about changing their numbers.

thanks for all the help and info guys. Went with the AC110, now just waiting for my tank to get to me tomorrow. Thanks again!

I will go with mos90 on this one... filter manufacturers generally advertise flow rates as what the unit can do empty.
