Acclimating Fish

It depends on what you are trying to acclimate.

When a fish comes from a bag, I just temperature match and net the fish out. I have had less losses this way than by trying to drip, or cup acclimate.

I have been reading a new theory that when you open a bag, the wastes fall out of solution or something...about CO2...anyway, it sounded good when I read it, so I've been just floating the bag and netting ever since.

A few of my friends in the aquarium club do the same thing with saltwater (all saltwater items.) I would imagine, the best way to acclimate something up or down in specific gravity, would be if it were never in a bag to begin with.

Float the bag for about 20 minutes until you think that the bag's temperature is the same as the temperture. I also add some stress coat a little time before I let the fish into the tank. The Doctor.

honestly i've never had a stress induced death of any of my fish.. knock on wood, i just float the bag for approx 15 minutes net em over the sink and put em in, sometimes add a little aquarium salt

oh well i went to a fish store in san franscico and he requires you bring a sample of water to him and he test your water and tells you if he will let u buy his fish or not he also then questioned me on how i acclimate fish and i said i let the big sit in the water for 30 minutes then he said i was uneduacted and that i have to use a drip system by the way i was in there to get a betta and some guppy and he says all his fish are wild from brazil or the amazon anyways i left the store pissed off because he kept saying im uneduacted

I drip acclimate.. but most my recent purchases have been wild caught or highly sensitive species. At work we often float, 15 min, bag swoosh to get some tank water in, 15 mins bag swoosh again. then net out. I also worked at a place and we temp acclimated the boxes, and just started netting out fish. Both ways worked, minimal losses. really depends on what your acclimateing imo.

fairly simple process.. I personally like ot use a 5 gallon bucket thats a dark color ( fish seem to feel safer in a dark container then threw a bag or translucent ones for some reason ime. I simply add the fish/water from the bag. and add a few cups every 15 mins or so. the more sensitive the species the longer I do it and the smaller amount of tank-water I add to the process. I like to 3x or 4x the original amount of water in the bag. obviousely you can use small containers for smaller bags of fish or larger containers like rubbermaids for large fish.

Some people will set-up a air-line hose w/ a clamp and literally drip acclimate in a similar fashion.

I live in San Francisco and was wondering which fish store it was. You don't have to tell me the name just what street it's on. There is a guy who owns a fish store in an alley who does want you to use the drip system. He's actually a nice guy and gives you his homemade drip stopper and large plastic cup. I hope it's not him otherwise he's changed, The Doctor
