Ackies all the way - get a large enough enclosure and you can keep a harem of em' - like having a pack of raptor's in your house :D

Here are some real red ackies.

These are some of mine at about 10" TL. They were red colored well under 10" and got redder as they grew. True Red Spiny Tailed monitors, varanus acanthurus acanthurus, come from a salt marsh area in western Australia and are a different subspecies than the yellow spiny tailed monitor. The terms "red" and "yellow" was started by Frank Retes as an easy way to distinguish between the two but it has spiraled out of control. Yellows can be a shade of red but, they are still varanus acanthurus brachyurus. There are pattern differences on the head and body. Yellows are near patternless and reds have pattern on their heads. Yellows have a faded pattern stripe down the center of their backs and reds do not. There are many crosses out there that exhibit traits of both.
Here is an adult pair.

Here is a great pic taken by Frank Retes that shows the differences between a red and a yellow.

Varanus.net won't allow links to their site. Copy and paste the address into your browser window. I'd upload the pics here but I haven't posted enough for that feature.
