Acrylic Thickness for a 360

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 360 gallon ( actually 374. soemthing) its 96 x 30 x 30 I bought it a couple years ago , the guy I bought it from said a guy at a LFS built it himself and its only 1/2 Inch acrylic but it does have 3 - 8 inch wide braces along the top and on each corner it has a 1/2 x 1/2 square peice of acrylic that runs from teh top to bottom of the tank ... Iguess for some kind of reinforcement ? I don't have it running right now ( will be soon) but It was full and running when I bought it and it didn't bow at all I was amazed that it didn'tcause every other Large aquarium made from acrylic I have seen had some bow to it ...

I wouldn't worry to much bro I am sure tencor wouldn't sell something with a lifetime warranty if they thought it wouldn't last ...
hope this helps and keep us updated if ya get it :-)

Not sure if this will help but it is the same manufacturer. I have a tenecor acrylic 96x36" but 30" high and 3/4" thick. It does not bow but maybe a 1/16th of an inch. Tenecor makes a quality product, their issue is with their customer service IME. But if you are buying Colton's 360g, at leastvyou won't have to deal with tenecor.

mine is not the same but 7x2x2 and it bows about half an inch horizontally across the center. I am always afraid my tank will pop I check the seems like once a month, I have never owned acrylic before so this bowing is new to me and as you said kinda unsettling. Plus mine is less then 2' from where I sleep, but I can say this I abused my tank by having it on a failed stand unknowingly it caused some crazy crazing, and its still holding up strong, so I would say its fine if you can live with the bowing.

At 30" tall 3/4" is pretty much standard. Right now I'm planning on ordering something around that size (8x3x2)and I'm just trying to figure out if I should come up with the extra cash and get one made out of 3/4" which to me seems the right thickness (based on the acrylic calculator). I checked with Midwest Custom (excellent customer service) and they use 3/4 for these dimensions unlike Tenecor or Precision Acrylic which are using 1/2". ....Another option will be going with 84" in lenght @ 1/2" thickness.

you will be fine with the 1/2" thickness, pretty standard for that footprint.... BUT if you want to spend the un-needed money to upgrade to 3/4" by all means go for it.

I am shocked tencore makes them that thick I thought their moto was they build them to have no bowing and no deflection, I see that on their site all over the place. Unless they are using lexan or something 1/2 will bow. I can't wait to see this beast congrats on the upcoming new monster

Hi,
Just figured i would drop some input here. All acrylic tanks will have a bit of bowing. A premium upgrade takes care of that rather easily. We don't build any tanks that we aren't sure will hold. We use thinner acrylic to keep the prices down.

A few people commented saying that perhaps we use lexan, we don't. We use a specially formulated acrylic that is designed for aquarium use. The bowing will exist but it will be minimal.

Hope to see the tank up and running!

Can you elaborate as to specifically what acrylic is used (i.e.- Polycast, Acrylite GP, Plexi-Glas G, etc.)? Thanks.
