acting stupid at lfs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And another thing about customers 99% dont know ****, .2% know only slightly more then "you have to add declor when you add tap water" .3% only know slightly more then most lfs workers. and .5% acctually keep fish as a hobby and acctaully know more then what other people in pet stores taught them. READ A BOOK!

yeah there bs stats, maybe i should make a poll at work lmao

i see that im giving the false impression that i go to places and when i hear incorrect information, i drill them about it. the only time ive said anything is when i asked an honest question, before i posted a thread elsewhere on this forum, of a good sized aquarium to temporarily keep some koi, and she said 10 gallons, i just said no and moved on. sometimes ill go to a lfs and ask something to hear if they can back my intel up on what ive heard from other posters on this forum, just to make sure b4 i make a purchase. ive even had a conversation with a guy who worked at petsmart but had previously worked at a lfs in missouri, and we were talking about arowana and catfish etc.

but by doing this, i can tell who to avoid, say if i know what i want i can just go get it if i am for sure of what it is im doing, or if i have a question that i am confident they can answer i will ask them.

i dont think its wrong that i can see who to avoid at a lfs because they are a "weekend warrior" so to speak. yes they are probably in high school or college and just have the job to make a few bucks, but i dont drill them about things that they should know, and i dont tell them that if they dont know the answer, and give me incorrect info, that they are wrong, i just get what i need and move on.

Has anyone ever thought that the person with the fish net and bag might acctually be a SALESPERSON. Not in the best interest of you or the fish. But in it for profit?
"yeah that 29.99$ RTC will be fine in you 30g" "sure that 69.99$ aro will do great in you 40g tall" "sure you goldfish will love to hang with your oscars" ...i could go on....

A wise man once told me "stupid is as stupid does". Acting stupid to a salesperson is pointless. To say it again dont be a douch, karma will kick your ass.

JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.....
can i direct your attention to the quote just above yours?

it depends on what local fish store i go to. i act dumb every now and then at petco, petsmart,or petland. because they don't know jack. I saw dallas north aquarium sell 2 - foot long pacu to a guy who only had a 100 gallon. i've seen dragon fish get sold to a couple that only had a 55 gallon. most of the good shops i go to the people know me.
so i don't mess with them and they know there stuff.

the petland that i go to is actually very knowledgeable, and they have alot of oddballs and rare stuff for the area.

well the ppl at the chain stores around here are pretty stupid...i mean if you work around something for 6mo+ i figure you could atleast know the name of something and even do a little more...but not around here. i was talking to one woman and she was like "yea im still being trained, i have been working 30+hrs a week for 6 mo and i really love these things" *points to tank full of neon tetras* "oh and those are kind of ugly" *points at oscars*
it is kind of embarasing.

i bought a dozen zebra danios for my 30g. the clerk asked if i was cycling my tank, because if it was i should take 40 to speed things up

too lazy to skim through 12+ pages to see but I worked at lfs, and after so many dumbasses come in honestly asking you stupid crap, you switch onto autopilot. I was no longer a hobbyist I was a store employee hating life. so I started screwing with the dillweeds. and when i wasnt busy acting like randall from clerks or hiding in the feeder room smoking Id cruise the floor for something I could pet:naughty:

but yea try n give em a break, that is probly the worst job Ive had. I mean in any given week I might be able to in good conscience sell 1 person a fish. I mean I was getting hit on more than I was asked reasonable questions about fish... and Im not very good looking.( www.myspace.com/blue_pill85) if you dont believe me

oh and my personal favorite.... them ghetto fabulous (not making a race statement usually more white then anything else) oh man is that a piranha... EVERYTHING was a piranha or an oscar and they always knew someone who had one bigger that was a killa man. man I F$kin hate the general public! except mfkers of course:headbang2

man I meant to type like one line and started babbling just goes to show you like 2 years later and it still gets me a riled up :WHOA:

Hey guys i work at a LFS i guess ud call it. (A Petco) Im training to become aquatics certified by their standards. The training "we" get is minimal but extensive enough. Without my online research and curiosity i'd be the same as those high school girls!!!!!!!! The ammount of actual factual learning is quite minimal but they do require us to know a fair ammount about salt water and freshwater. I'm not going to chastise the company i work for because they really are quite adiment about ensuring the costomer recieves adequate info on the care and requirenments for any animal purchased. But without people truly concerned about costomers understanding and care we'd be just like the people i posted about in a thread on "General Aquatics Discussion", luckily most places like the one i work at have knowledgeable associates who can help a customer in making a correct decision on a fish,

Holy cow you guys are brutal! Try to play nice, ok?

Here's an idea:Why doesn't everybody just start posting MFK flyers in LFSs? (IF IT'S LEGAL!) I know I've benefitted from the wealth of information on here, so why can't other noobs AND employees? It's a catchy site name (at least, that's what got me here). Who doesn't want to see some monster fish?

You're really only as smart as the information available to you. Sure they could google it, but why not try to catch their attention with a specific site with neverending info?

It's like the "Give a man a fish" thing. Don't just tell people a little tidbit of info, show them where to teach themselves.
