I've had my tank for almost a decade now so i really don't remember how much I spent on the set up, but in the last year or so, all i spent is 40$ for a pair of BGK, 20$ for a huge shell and 10$ for a siphoning tube. So thats 70$ 
Of course there is food, electic and water bill but it's not that much.

My 55gal was $499 with the tank,wooden stand, gravel, heater,filter, and hood/light. My 5.5gal cost $75 to set up with no hood or light.

I'm afraid too. LOL. I don't need stuff as my tanks have long been established, but I keep spending to satisfy my urges to have the latest and greatest equipment, among other things.
My 265 I purchased from another member was 800 with the tank,stand,glass tops,lights,and wet/dry filter with return pump......I have yet to set it up.
including all th efish that have jumped out been eated or died in the power out and water temp getting to hot ive spent at least $3000 of just fish ive had 3 different $500 fish ive got a $600 filter $100 tank plant lights and baulbs $100. my fisrt $100 tank 2 diff heaters $75, 2 diff aquaclear 110 $200, fluval 405 $200, and way more other **** i cant think of prob about $5000-$6000 total sense last october
