Added black sand...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks. I'll try to get some updated pics tonight. The gar in the pics above is super dark now, even his whole belly has turned almost pure black. I got a second florida gar on saturday, but he's a lot lighter than my first one. He is darkening up as well though.

The bass completely left the gar alone. However, this past weekend I traded the 2 pbass for another florida gar. I liked them a lot, but they were gonna outgrow that tank sooner rather than later. I'll have a bit more time with the gar in this tank. Was too busy to get pics tonight, I'll try to do it tomorrow.

Looks sweet I hope you have better luck than i did with the tahitian sand. I put the white sand in my 125 loved the way it looked but it was too fine.I had to be very careful during water changes. I now have an AC110 and 2 Emporer 400's making a lot of noise. I've cleaned them out I'm hoping it's just the impellers. Needless to say I pulled all the sand out last night. I wish you a lot of luck.

I washed pretty much all the fines out of the sand, all that's left are the larger grains. When I put it in the tank, it didn't even cloud it up a bit.

Plus, I use a sump, and my filter bag will catch anything that goes through the plumbing before it gets to the pumps.

Here are some updated pics of the tank. Inhabitants: 2 Florida gar, 1 Indo datnoid, 1 Red Snook, 1 Venezuelan pike cichlid. Everyone is happily eating freeze dried krill now (and testing pellets) except for my original Florida gar. He's a stubborn little bugger, but I'll get him soon. No more feeders till he starts eating krill...

Looks good, but I would take out that rock in the middle it looks like it could topple into the glass. I've kept that pike cichlid they can be pretty aggressive at feeding time. (in your update pic.)
