I love tree roots. I have one I got from the back of a gas station and another from my parent's back yard.. Boiled, scrubbed and cooked those suckers in a giant restaurant pot. Couldn't get them to sink for squat. One's a table centerpiece and the other in the fishroom closet.
Will take a pic of the pot and the roots I have.
Yours look nice. I think big roots look very dramatic in big tanks, especially long ones.
The wood in my aquarium is trying to float up. I cut them so they wedge in there under the glass cross brace in the middle. I had a tape measure with me when I collected them so I could make sure it was big enough to trim to fit and wedge in place. It is in two halves so I could get them in the tank. One piece covers the middle and right side. The other is just a few long roots I placed so they look like they are part of the other one. It actually came out looking better that I thought it would when I collected the roots. I could not find roots that looked like what I had envisioned.
I need to take another picture. I added colorful plastic plants to brighten it up to please the wife. ?
Well, I think there was something in the roots that was toxic to my fish. I did lose a couple. I removed the roots and did a 90% water change.
That did not fix it, so I did another 90% water change. They look healthy and are swimming around and eating again.
Live and learn. Some here warned me that could happen.
I put a few bright colored plants in my tank to make my wife happy.
I liked the roots, but this is better than nothing I guess. ?
I also removed 2/3 of the gravel, so they can't pile it up 7" tall, but they have not started nesting again since the toxic water problem...
I lost my three biggest fish, but I have over 200 fry in other tanks.
Sorry to hear that you lost some, I must say I much preferred the roots to the plastic plants. Tank still looks good though. Hobby is a learning process always, now you know to only use very dead wood. I usually only use smaller branches and things but would love to have a tank similar to Randy's with some big root structures. Great look.
