I go to a local landscape supply business that has a large yard with big piles of all kinds of different rocks. You can just wander around and pick out what you want.

I can fill up my trunk for about $12!!!

I've always collected rocks from just about everywhere I go. (Truck Driver) But when it comes to the aquarium rocks the landscape supply is definitely the best idea. They'll sell you your perfect rocks for very little money.
