Adding Salt!!??

ive already got the water from my freshwater setup in the tank
ive got everything else i need for a salt setup i just need to add salt.
could i just put the salt in the tank and stir it for ages?
Ive also already got about 6750l/h of flow in the tank.

I wouldn't. Salt mixing should not be done inside a tank where there will be livestock. Salt mixing should be done in a seperate bucket(s) or pails where the water and salt mix is properly stirred and aerated.

Its best if u use new water, too many bacteria and detritus in ur old tank, you will end up with a bunch of crap floating around if u use ur old water.

Do you have fish in the current tank? Sounds like not?


I agree that you should do it outside in the buckets, but I guess if there is nothing in the tank yet, you could do it inside the tank.

since there's no fish in the tank as it's set up as a freshwater now...

You COULD just add the salt

All the crap and die off will just add ammonia for the new cycle

I would have done this with my tank, but we have copper and such in our tapwater and I am using RODI anyways

i agree with bigG. The first time you add salt, its perfectly fine to use the tank. However, after this time, is when you need the buckets and what not. Its recommended to let the water agitate for a full 24 hours before it makes it way into your tank.

Initially, run the filter and what not. As long as you dont have any freshwater gravel, which should not be used anyways, the salt will break down in the water over time. Being mixed by powerheads pointed towards the bottom of the tank, will also do the trick. Let the tank run for 24 hours before you add your sand and rocks, or whatever you want to use, and go from there with the cycle. Adding cocktail shrimp is the better method and also the cheapest

its already cycled from freshwater do i have to do it again.
ill think ill do it like this.(i dont have a ro filter)
-take 1 bucket of tank water out of the tank
-fill 1 bucket of dechlorinated water and add 1/4 of a 50 gallon mix bag of salt and mix it
repeat until enough salt is used for the amount of water in the tank
the salinity in the bucket of water will be way too high but once i add it to the tank it will become good hopefully

or shud i just mix in tank

it has no fish or other living things in it just two fluval internal filters a powerhead, heater, and sand

or shud i just mix in tank <-- bingo i'd just literally dump a little bit les the salt you think you'll need straight in.. then add more to attain your given salinity
