interesting twist of fate that now I run a reptile rescue that strives to educate the public on species identification and proper care and respect for these animals.

hmm if you are running a rescue then you should know above anything else that you shouldnt be taking out of the wild and hunting one to own as a pet. im saying that because you are suppose to be educating the public about the respect of these animals.

im not mad at the op for doing this as i have done it in the past also but then again we are not public talkers or a rescue shelter. so to the op good luck with the snake and hope it eats and to kitty sorry but it had to be said.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with collecting on a small scale. I also take part in a rescue but collect on occasion. The snakes that I collect are often used in my shows since they are a great tool to teach about native species.

Also, when I worked at the Museum of Science and history, every last one of the snakes (except for the indigo) in the Florida Naturalist center was wild caught and was being used to teach children how to identify species and about why they are good to have around.

^this!

plus u have to look at all of our specimens came from the wild initially, and these are not readily available in the hobby

yes i know and im not mad at kitty by no means as i know from time to time we will collect from the wild but the thing is is that she is running a rescue site and with her im sure she wont have any problems at all housing it. but she is basically saying its ok to collect from the wild so if someone that cant house something for life or long term is reading this is like "well its ok cause she does it" when in all actuallity its not unless you are going for that particular species and have a home and everything ready. and even then you should look for a captive bred specimen.

some people especially kids will want to keep a wild animal then when it gets too big will just think well it came from the wild why not release back into the wild. and thats not ok or they will want to take it to a rescue. thats better but still couldve been avoided if more people preach research and buy captive bred species and only buy if you can house and take care of for life.

the only reason i brought it up was because she is a public speaker and what happens when a kid stumbles across this site and sees that the person that just talked to them goes out and catches these animals from the wild and think its ok to do it too. she is creating more work for herself in the possible future and also saying its ok to do.

and i know after i posted that i regretted it cause yes its dumb but its just how i feel and like i said im not mad at her as i have and probably will in the future collect from the wild, but if i was a public speaker or ran a animal shelter i wouldnt be saying that aloud i guess.

I am a public speaker as well but one of the things i integrate into m talks is responsible ownership and i strongly discourage the wild collection of readily available species such as garters and corn snakes. I can't tell you how many people come to my work asking for information on corn snakes because they caught one in their yard and wanted to keep it -_-
When it is something like that I am VERY against wild collection.
However with something like a ring neck snake... or my covetted Xenodermus javanicus that I will have one day.. theres really no other way to get it. There are ring necks available in the hobby but all of those are wild caught as well.

I undestand where you are coming from but I disagree that just becuase she is a public speaker she shouldn't collect native species if they aren't readily available (and if it's legal)
