advice for keeping and ebjd

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From my experience young ebjd are very easily stressed, what I always refer to as black fish syndrome (just my own personal name for it). These guys, if stressed will seem to die for no reason. Stress will compromise an already underdeveloped immune system which doesn't seem to really kick in until they reach ~3" after that they are pretty hardy. They must not get bullied they don't handle that well at all. One of the best foods I've found is NLS thera A+ the higher inclusion rate of garlic helps to acidify the gut preventing bacterial infections that manifest themselves as the white stringy poop that is often confused with and incorrectly treated as internal parasites. So to sum up the most important thing you can do for a young ebjd other than a clean environment is eliminate stress.
If he has the white/clear stringy looking poop what do I do

He most likely has internal bacteria infection. Discontinue carbon filtration and treat your tank with Kenaplex (might be Kanapex) according to label ditections. Keep temperature stable around 82 so as not to stress him at this time. Feed well but sparingly, ensuring all food is eaten, and no excess laying about. Be sure to do reccomended water change at end of treatment and resume carbon filtration. If that doesn't work, then we'll consider parasites...

You ever going to post a picture of him/her?

Is there any thing that I can buy locally at the local fish store or PETsMART that can help I don't want to waste time waiting on shipping. And I will post pics soon. I broke my good phone so now I have this one that takes crappy photos

What's your pH & GH? If your pH is below 7.2 and soft you could use Maracyn 2, it isn't as effective as Kanamycin but is an alternative if that's all is available. Also feed thera A+ as I mentioned earlier, it helps acidify the intestinal tract creating an environment that is not conducive to pathological bacteria. This should be done before medication is considered.

He's just a baby lol...
If Kanaplex unavailable, a fairly good remedy which is carried by any lfs worth it's salt is Myracin and Myracin II... READ THE LABELS as I haven't used them in years (I'm fairly certain these were the ones I combined safely for a one-two punch against bacteria).
For a beginner, the entire Mardel line is good to keep on hand and come complete with diagnosis flow charts.
Open one of the boxes before purchase, follow the charts and the recmmended products. It's not perfect for a beginner, but it's pretty darned good. When fish get sick, they can die fairly quickly... a matter of days sometimes... sometimes sooner because by the time most beginners notice a problem, the fish has already been sick a while.
The rule is Treat it Right the first time and if you're not sure what it is (short of biopsy)... treat the most serious of the possibles first.
Give it time to work... ie., the full regimen according to directions! We don't need half measures creating resistant strains of pathogens. There's already enough of that.

Will API® Melafix Fish Bacerial Infection Treatment work?
It's internal... Pimafix though for fungal, also can treat internal bacterial infections, but these are not anywhere near as good as actual medications. They are more a preventative than a cure.

My gh is at 60 and my ph is at 7.5. I'm horrible at reading these test strips. Ima take it in to the aquarium store when they open and have them test it
