Advice on Buying First Piranhas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What is the average life span of a piranha? What temperature should I keep the water at? I need to know if I am going to keep them outside. Are RBP more active swimmers than Pacu? The guy who is building my tank is asking me what thickness he should make the glass 6 mm or 8 mm, it wll save me about $15 if I get a 6 mm rather than 8 mm.

you gotta figure out that search tab at the top of you screen.
Gets kind of tedious to keep putting out the same information to newbies over and over

Hey sry it pissed you off man but I know I'm speaking for alot of members here. We hear the same questions over and over again and it gets old after a while. And with the exceptions of your last question everything you asked has been covered many times over. Its not hard to do a search by any means

I'm sry claw, I have no idea about glass thickness. I don't mess around with building tanks. I can tell you that the dude building this for you should know and if he doesn't, then he probably doesn't know what the hell he's doing because he's never done this before. Which wouldn't give me a whole lot of confidence.

In your previous posts you claimed that you only have enough space for a tank that is 36"Long 9"wide and 20"Tall. This is not large enough for even a single Red Belly piranha let alone three. Your tank plans are not wide enough. Push that out to 13" and you will be able to keep a single specimen in there for at least a few years.

How long can the tank that I suggested last 3 piranha ( What length should each piranha be for me to change the tank?)

Oh so the width is the problem? The ledge that I am keeping it on can support a 25cm width, I am afraid though, that if I get a tank with a more width, the tank might overbalance and fall (which means bye bye piranhas).

They'd only be able to stay in there, with frequent water changes, and extra filtration until they're about 3-4" (roughly 2-3 months)

I'd try to get it built the maximum size that you can, as long as it's AT or OVER the dimensions of a 75 gallon tank (I lost my tape measure, and the numbers escape me right now)

You could probably www.google.com search for what the glass thickness should be, because if you save $15 and the tank breaks, it's going to be more expensive to fix.

Good luck!

The shop guy told me that a 60 cm long tank would last 4 piranha for a year (In Dubai we do not talk bout tank size in gallons, we talk about it in length or litres), I am guessing that is a little accurate considering that you said that if I increased the tank size I claimed to 13 inches in width it could last a single red belly for a few years. I can also add another inch or 2 in length, I checked again. Does height really matter that much? because I am thinking of making it 51 cm or 50 height ( That is because if I should not cover it with the curtain, then the curtain needs to go behind the tank)

I hate to say it, but the shop guy will tell you anything you want to hear, just to make a sale, he'd probably say that you could keep it in a fish bowl for life if he really thought you'd buy it, and he knew space was the issue preventing you from buying more.

height is no where near as important as length, so you could probably get away with making it taller and it really wouldn't matter if it were 20" or 40".

of course, if this is a growout tank you don't have to wory about this, but if it was for life, you'd have to take into consideration how tall their body will be as adults (from belly to top of dorsal fin) when building a tank.

I am buying them at 3-4inches, I am talking of only a 1-2 year plan people not anymore than that. I suppose that I could put the piranha in a 50 gallon I have and put my jar outside, the shop guy said that if it is a large body of water then it will not heat or cool that fast ( not to mention if the glass is 10mm thick and the outside temperature does not go past 50 degrees celsius).
