Does anyone use timers on multiple heaters like this? Maybe have a thermostat rigged to them and a timer in that loop?

Multiple heaters running on a controller/thermostat are the way to go IMO. And on this topic, if your tank is going to be in a cold garage seriously consider insulating the back, sides and top with polystyrene.
