Advice please! Tank Mates for Aggressive Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Many different tankmates that could go with those cichlids, just can't go with in that size tank. So I'll just save it :screwy:

Plenty of bottom feeders you could put in there, but it's a pretty expensive way to feed your fish. I won't suggest that you're overstocked since you already did that yourself, but I have a 90 with a Jd, GT, firemouth and con and my GT is getting it's butt kicked as we speak. They'll be moving into a 300 shortly since I feel I'm close to overstocked.....

i know you dont wanna hear this but if you dont move those fish into a larger tank your gonna wind up with one fish......the jag!

Couldn't agree more with you on that one, jags are very territorial and will do anything to take over a tank with less space like that as it grows larger, doesn't matter if he has a midas in that tank at all.

I'm not trying to be offensive, but it just doesn't make sense to ask your question. Basically your asking what cat would work in your tank, but saying you know nothing will due to the size. Why ask for advice if your really not up to taking any? You've obviously made your own decision about tank size and fish compatibility, so why ask? You've taken some very aggressive cichlids and crammed them in a small tank. I personally overstock often due to selfishness, but I try to choose my fish better. Highly aggressive, territorial fish housed together are always a risk. Your just asking for disaster in such a small tank.

Thanks everybody, I might look at getting some clown or yoyo loaches. I'll have to see how big Raphaels get. And btw, my Green terror does just fine with the other fish. Aggression is always a problem with these kinds of cichlid but he seems to be ignored for the most part.

I understand the risks with the compatibility of these fish. They aren't crammed, and they're actually all rather content in there. You suggested nothing and your response was useless. Next time save your breath (or... your types or whatever lol)

I assumed this was just a growout tank that's why I didn't mention anything about stocking issues in my initial reply. But if your plan is to keep all three of these large cichlids together in this size tank, then adding anything more will be a gamble. IMO a 90 is good as a solo tank for either the Midas or GT. Then you could add a couple of small cichlids, Cory Cats, and small schooling fish. An adult Jag, especially a male will require more territorial and physical space to house it for life. They may be living together peacefully now, but as they grow and mature you will encounter some problems and/or casualties. I've seen these fish housed plenty of times together in much larger tanks, so it is very possible. Just don't take advice and experiences as a personal attack on you or your tank. People are only trying to help. You're going to encounter this when you make threads and post info about your tank and stock. The only way to avoid any criticism or advice about your tank is to not make any posts or threads about it. I hope you understand the general concerns about your stock and not just take them as attacks. But good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Skip the clowns. Potential foot long schoolers in a 90 is not a good idea unless it's a growout tank. Don't take this as an attack, but I really want to keep a festae and a managuense with the 4 cichlids(con,GT,firemouth and Jd) I have now and I'm a bit worried about the aggression issues in a 300. My plan is to let the 4 I have now reach adult size, then add a juvenile festae then a juvi jag. Then I'll cross my fingers and hope it can work.

Best of luck with whatever you decide, but a potentially 16" predator cichlid in a 90 is recipe for either a single fish or a larger tank.

I hope you don't find it to be a attack,we just don't want you to run into a disaster down the road with your Jaguar being the territorial cichlid out of the GT and Midas.I had a Jaguar at one point that took over my JD,GT,and Severum's territory, but the Jaguar tried to take over my Oscars side and the jaguar was pummeled by my Oscar.Jaguar was taken out and given away afterwards from not getting killed by my Oscar.Even though I have a 125 gallon fish tank now,but at the time, didn't have the cash to get everyone in a much bigger tank right away.
