African Arowana Care

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What i told you says it all. 4" in slightly over a month. They slow down when they get older but when they're small, growth rates are rockets! How big is your tank at the moment? I wouldn't suggest tubiflex worms cos' they aren't substantial enough and they may carry diseases. I know of a friend's 9 piece comm. that got wiped out after he, like you, tried feeding them tubiflex worms cos' he wanted to see more sand-sifting action. FBW are still the best at the moment! As long as you see him sucking up the FBW, then you're fine. You should only be worried when he ISN'T eating and just sitting at a corner.

Also, remember to take into consideration when you're feeding him that the Bichirs will most likely eat the FBW as well so make sure he has enough food. Keep him fat yea. They're really amazing fishes. I was at C328 a couple of days back and i was SO tempted to get myself another one but they looked really weak and i feared they wouldn't survive the trip back home.

but 3 cubes is a lot isnt it? for just a single aro? my bichirs prefer hikari sinking pellets over FBWs...and also, do you just toss your blood worm cube into the tank or do you let it 'thaw' in water and then pick the worms out and feed them? cos i do the latter, i'm worried that the cube might cloud the water or something. so its fine to just let the cube in the tank?

Then keep it at 2 cubes, especially if you see a lot of waste. I don't toss them in, i thaw them in a container then using a turkey baster, i "place" the FBW at specific locations of the tank, away from the filter inlet.

thanks! oh thats my brine shrimp hatchery, hahah. wanted to try feeding little brine shrimp to my african arowana. not sure if its gonna work out or not tho...

How big's your tank at the moment? And i really like your sand, mind telling me what it's called and where you bought it?

wow, alright thanks you really made me feel a lot better about my african arowana. he's very active, always swimming and sifting thru the sand looking for food i suppose. yea, i was little worried about tubifex cos i know how they smell and where they thrive (in sewers!!!) so none of that i guess. i know i gotta feed these guys a couple of times a day not like any of my other fishes that i've had. they're all housed in a grow out, its only a 10 gallon, but will be moving them to a 200 gallon hopefully by the end of this year or earlier. plan was to set up an african tank with the 200 gallon. hopefully 2 obscuras and an african lungfish. we'll see as time goes. THANKS FOR THE HELP CHRISTIAN! will update if he makes its long enough. will definitely try my best to get him big and healthy! thanks again!

Hey no problem! A 10 gallon's fine but i would think only for a couple of months max. Mine's in a 15g but i'll be moving her into a 4 footer once she gets a little bigger. And i wouldn't suggest an African Lungfish though. We have pretty similar taste in fishes but i've asked around and lungfish don't tend to do well in comms unless it's a really docile SAL or the tank is overstocked. I wanted to get a Lungfish but i decided not to risk my Afro. Up to you though. Good luck!

One last thing. I've been told once they hit 10", they're pretty much good for life unless you screw up real bad somewhere along the way. Any smaller and they're still fragile.

alright thanks bud, appreciate the help. anyways since you said we have similar tastes, i did see an obscura in singapore and it is a real obscura. many people mistake common snakeheads for an obscura almost bought a splendid because of a guy who was soooo certain that his splendid was an obscura, but i knew it wasnt. i knew the one i saw was an obscura because it had a triangle at its caudal fin. here, i've attached the picture of the obscura i took at the store and the picture of the splendid this guy almost sold me. the obscura was going for $35 at the shop at serangoon north's pet walk.

Ah, Atlantis would be the shop's name. I'm currently waiting for Uncle to stock up on some Aurantimaculata before i head back over and bag one. I love snakeheads but i don't like the colorless ones; Argus, Obscura, Parachanna & Lucius. Lovely fishes though!

wow, argus aye? thats gotta be pretty cool except i think they'd require cooler water temperature since they're from the states? alright all the best with your fish endeavors and thanks a lot for the help, its greatly appreciated. please post some pictures of your afro if you can haha. thanks and i will update in a month if he lives. PEACE OUT!!!!
