I MAY be planning to get an afro... But I already have a 13" silver arowana... I don't think they'll mix well.. Maybe ill sell off the silver too... Well it all depends though.. Ok now I know NOTHING about Afros... So can anyone guide me with they're own experience or a good website? I've googled african arowana but I didn't get much.. All I know they are filter-feeders which I have no idea what is.. Please help... Thanks

I never had any problem with African Aros dieing, except them getting killed by bigger fish. But alot of people tell me they have problems keeping 5" and under African Aros alive. Basically what I do is keep it in clean water, feed them blackworms when there smaller. ;) When there bigger, train them onto other food like mealworms, pellets, meaty food.

Ok... So I think i'll get one over 5" :) So when should I start training them on pellets? And what other food can be replaced with blackworms when they're young?

Hao can you tell me the list of tanks you have and their stocks? I need some inspiration to stock my future 450gal... :p

IMO there is no other food better than blackworms for young African Aro. Mines started eating pellets around 8". It takes patience, I don't starve my Aros onto pellets. ;) African Aro should never be starved, its not good for them. Pm me if you need ideas to stock your 450g :naughty:

Then how do you get yours on pellets? About the PM i'll do it later im kinda busy now :)

I read this on matthews link:
This species is easily spooked, and may panic and throw itself against the tank glass. H. niloticus is a filter feeder which obtains nutrients in nature by filtering plankton and other micro-organisms through its gills.

Do I need to add anything into the tank for my afro to filter-feed?

I think filter feed means they eat small food and food particles and stuff like that. My African Arowana isn't really spooked and doesn't throw its self into the tank, it would only happen if you got a small tank and it feels cramped. I usually bump the temperature to 86 F and don't feed them fully just feed them enough to pass the day, do that for 1 week then they should eat pellets. Once they eat the pellets, lower the temperature back to your original temperature. If not, madness will occur, madness=African Aro eating everything-making you broke. That happen to me before with my big 18"-20" one. :D It eat everything even crickets, algae wafer,Fd krills, superworm and etc.

:iagree:

I have an African arapaima (IMO), of 55+cm.
A hardy creature, when passed certain age and length.
Not a stupid fish. Can get very docile.
