whne i feed crickets do i just go to the pet store and buy like a dozen small crickets? do i feed to feed them (crickets) anyhting to make them healthy for them?

Howdy,

I currently keep 5 in a 220 gal. My crickets come from www.wormman.com They are much better quality than at the LFS, and cheaper, too. I always order 1000, they last for about a couple of weeks. When you have juveniles, get the 1/8''. I now feed 1/4'' but mine are pretty much adult now.

As guppy said, 3 will be fine in your 55 gal. I think 5 might be pushing it. Get some floating plants, like water lettuce, and/or vallisneria that reaches the surface.

On edit: I feed my crickets with fish food (flakes, tabs, pellets)

how big do they get?how small of a tank can i put one in if i were,in fact, only going to get one?i dont own anything smaller than a betta, actually all my fish are in my signature, would it mess with any of the fish in the community tanks?what about the ghost shrimp...i know they stay on the bottom but does it ever come down from the surface for any reason.....like a tasty ghost shrimp?i saw one at petco and it was about 3.5 inches long.unless it gets much bigger i was thinking of trying one out in my 10 gallon.....

I've been eyeing them up for years now.

I'm setting up a 37 gallon High tank right now with the blue rams and the shoal of baby clown loaches I have in my baby tank. I'm really thinking about one for the top of the tank... Thoughts?

im going to just go ahead and do it.the smallest fish i have in my 10 gallon is a betta and i did find this picture on the net....the closer fish looks lika a betta,no?

Lots of luck in your findings. I've had 2 for years now, they seem to love freeze dried shrimp the best, but will eat almost anything that floats. Beautiful and unusual fish that isn't that expensive if you can find 'em.

What a lucky thread!!! I picked one up yesterday!!! Ive seen them for like 25 bucks but that was ridiculous, and I saw them for 8, so I bought one.

I only got one for the time being to see how it would do. I'm watching it closely in my planted 55 gallon, with pearl gourami's and festivums and other community fish.

Densely planted along the bottom and plenty reach up to the top so it's cool for hiding.

Been doing fine ever since. I'll post some pics if I can.

Please don't do that. These are majestic fish that require at least the length of a 55 gal. They get around 5'' long and need a good surface area to be happy and healthy. I had 2 in an 80 gal, and it worked out great. Although they are not schooling fish, they should be kept at least in pairs. Again, 10 gal is waaaay to small, and a 37 long would be much better than high for them. I personally think 55 gal is the minimum ...

And yes, they eat anything they can fit in their mouth. If a shrimp comes to the surface at night, it's toast. Anything smaller than swordtails will be attacked.

They can get a total length of 5 inches and I have had them eat guppies, small tetras, hatchetfish, tiny crabs, scuds, and ghost shrimp but never bother anything bigger. Here is a pretty good profile. http://www.centralpets.com/animals/fish/freshwater_fish/fwf4473.html A 10 g is barely big enough if you only keep one but I would remove the shrimp first. It won't bother the other fish in there.
