african cichlid problem,need help !!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should be able to buy a pH buffer, that will raise your pH to like 8.0

I'm usually don't worry about pH so much, mine is usually around 7.5
I think most pet stores just keep them in average tap water, and I think they are used to a little lower pH.
It might not just be your pH, they're could be lots of things that cause them to scratch on rocks. High nitrates, chlorines, metals like iron in your water could cause this. You can buy a water conditioner, to remove harmful things and it helps the slim coat for your fish that will help them be healthier.

Your lfs should at least have a book or two on aquarium water quality, how the different water types and chemicals interact with eachother. Most lfs can test your water for you for free too. Maybe you could bring in a sample of your water from your tank, in a clean cup or zip-lock plastic bag, and take it with you to the store? ***also, the 'pH up' products have to be added a bit at a time, or the fish will shock and die from too fast of a pH change. Good Luck with your fish. :D

Umm, I probably wouldn't put any africans in with a Jaguar cichlid.

As for breeding them, I have no clue but I wouldn't just get a male/female pair. Multiple females and one male.

Even though it could be a sign of poor water quality, sometime Africans will flick off the substrate and rocks to show off to one another and sometimes mark territory. I have impecable water quality and they will do this every now and again. Don't be surprised (if it's not the quality of the water conditions) if you get a pair mating.

They sell chemicals to make your ph go up
The last thing you want to do is use chemicals to mess with your pH.
Use aragonite sand, crushed coral, holey rock or other limestone rocks to buffer the water.
