African cichlids in Hawaii

Jojo moved? I hope he's still doing good. I remember him back to kalihi pets when it was in the old strip mall before they moved.

The introduced species do affect the native species, the remaining native species do remain and spawn in the mountains; although their larvae hatches in seawater, then have to migrate thru the lower streams(that are full of introduced species and prey upon native larvae)to the cooler upper streams.

Yet it has going on for over 200 years, and the native species are still here. Saltwater fishes eat larvae too and then the natives have to deal with the sleepers, the largest native fish species as well. Its not like the natives are dodo that doesn't have any predators and are dumb to deal with them. One good thing about the introduced species is that they will be too busy eating other introduced species than the tiny native gobies. I took a look at the introduced fish species list and it appeared that most of them are not piscivorous fishes.

The rate of introductions has skyrocketed in the past 20 yrs. Not to mention the parasites that have come with them.(nematodes, trematodes, etc). If anyone thinks these introductions have been benign, is mistaken.

Then they should went extinct already a long time ago if they can't adapt to the competition and the degradations caused by the human activities.

Human alterations to waterways and pollution has probably done more damage than the invasive species. Case in point the massive fish kill in manoa about 6 years ago from a chemical dump.
