IM new to this site and I would just like to say Hello to everyone. I bought a piece of African Mopani Root from Aquarium Plant's Online and I was wondering if I have to do anything to the wood before I put it in the tank??? I have a 30 Gallon Goldfish tank with 2 Lionhead's and 1 Oranda. I have a Penguin 350 filter and an air diffuser. The wood is 6 X 15. Thank you everyone!!! :)

Welcome to MFK, your going to want to soak the mopani in a bucket for a few days to make sure theres no tannins in the wood that will leach out and stain your water. Change the water every day until theres no color leaching out.

Thank you very much for your help. Could you please tell me if the Mopani Root is a good wood???

Mopani is a fine food. It's too hard for panaques to eat, so don't try using it for that. They prefer softer wood like hemlock lumber, etc. But it lasts decades and will house a lot of beneficial bacteria. Makes great cave wood, too, with all it's noks and crannies. A few soaks in a bucket will remove a lot of the tannins, but hopefully your wood will color water for a few months before it 'dries up'. The tannins are great for hardening goldfish scales and promoting immune function, if I remember right. Enjoy!

Got ahead of myself on that one! I meant 'wood' not 'food' in that sentence.

That lionhead looks beastly! I had some adult ryukin for a few months. They almost spawned and I was like, "No way am I raising 1000 fry" so I returned them. I still miss them but the extra tank space has served me well.

some people also boil wood in a big pot [if it fits] especially if picked your driftwood from nature of don't know its origins.

My Lionhead is a BEAST!!! She is really cool. My friend who works in a fish store gave her to me from his collection. I don't think I would want to raise 1000 fry either. I thought how cool the wood is used for food. LOL. That was funny!!! Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it.
