African River Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's highly unlikely that the lil' synos would prey on their tank mates. It's not impossible but I believe it would be very, very unusual... like winning a lottery.

My syno has a tiny mouth.

3 STRIPED GLASS CATFISH!!!! GET THEM!!!!

They are wonderful mid dwelling fish in a group and a tank like yours is perfect. They get no bigger than 8cm in extremes

I dig these a lot. I have a thing for fish with odd behaviors. Lots of clown loaches. But upside down cats have this thing that rarely happens, while moving from one piece of cover to another, if something like another fish gets in their way they will usually stop and go back. But occasionally they will stop and freeze in position and slowly float to the surface. It is complete no movement other fish bump into them and they don't react at all.once they hit the surface right back to life and back to cover. First time I saw this I thought oh no why did he just up and croak? It's happened a few times over the last year or so and I find it absolutely hilarious.
That's awesome! I've never seen Felix do that. Hopefully it'll be more likely if he has friends in the tank. :)

Isn't white or light colored sand typical in African rivers/lakes? At least every picture/show I've seen appear to be.
Also Congo tetras are gorgeous.
I'm looking for a light brown sand, I've got nice gravel for it now and think I light brownish sand would look nice with it.

And Congo tetras are beautiful which is why I can't have them, I don't think my little catfish would be the center of the tank if I had Congo tetras. :D And on top of that they get to large to house a group comfortably in my tank.

Its good to have people telling me this, it gives me a lot of piece of mind hearing it from the guys here. :)

My syno also has a tiny mouth but he's still a catfish! :P

And I'll look into the catfish, thanks! :D

I wouldn't worry about the synos eating anyone. I have 6 with about 12 Congo tetras and its a really active tank. Make sure to have some driftwood reaching the upper levels of the tank so the synos will use more of the tank, this is something I need to do.

That's the plan, I have a beautiful big bit of wood for them as well as some smaller pieces, and I'm hoping to get another biggish bit before we get it set up.

We had a few setbacks with the tank so I've got another few days to hopefully find something.

synos wont eat tank mates. I have a eupterus that's pushing 8 inches right now and he's never even looked at a tank mate cross ways. those little 3-4 inch synos aren't hurting anyone lol.

my African river tank went from Africa to Africa/asia since my polys, syno and bush fish weren't lively enough and I added 7 clown loaches lol.

I love my little Felix. I want him to be happy as possible. :D

Update!

So I was doing a course thing for a few days and while I was doing that my hubby (his name is Jeff) decided to kick his butt into gear and finish the tank..

Before I'd even gotten home Thursday he had all the fish from the 120 in the 170, and swapped out the 120 for my sisters 80ltr (apparently her goldfish are loving the extra room) which is currently still empty.

My betta also got moved to the 170 in his own little divided section until Jeff can fix the pump for his tank because it crapped itself yesterday morning.. Idk why, it just stopped working

Anyway, hopefully the 80ltr one can be set up today or tomorrow, because once that's set up, the real fun begins :D

I'll take a pic when the day brightens up a bit, I thought I'd update this now so I don't forget to do it later... Also I didn't get the chance to get pics of the finished tank before he put water and fish in it. :(
