African River Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well out here one buys pond plants at nurseries and online, but it might be hard there, because u r in the expensive land where everything fun is banned.
I was thinking nurseries, I suppose that's somewhere to start, hopefully if they can't sell me anything they can at least point me in the right direction. :)

Thought I'd update because something awesome happened!

But first an update on where I was up until around 2:00 this arvo.. Everyone from the 120ltr are now in the 170ltr, I've got the 80ltr in my yard I've just got to get around to cleaning it out

Secondly, we've've asked around all the fish shops and no one can get me any fish from central Africa that aren't catfish, cichlids or damn Congo tetras  So I'm going to just go with syno species tank, I hope they like it :).

I've also got two more little synos in the 170 now that I've had for a while named Mike and Salem. Mike is very dark and has much more brown than Felix, and Salem is very light - he's absolutely beautiful!!!

It was also probably a blessing in disguise that the shops couldn't get me any little fish, someone in the 170 has murdered 3 minnows, so the other 2 are now in with Miles in his 50ltr, I know its small for them but at least they're not being eaten!

Now - and here's the best part - we got the best deal on a 4'x2'x2' tank today! $200!!!!! Down here you can't get a 150ltr for that, even if it is second hand! HELL YEAH!!!!! Its been drilled for a sump so we're hoping to use the 170ltr as a sump for it (170 has also been drilled but my hubbys blocked it off) so that'll be interesting, but once he's worked that out, I'm guna put my synos in it!!! :D :D :D :D :D

That being said, how many synodontis nigriventris can live comfortably in a 4'x2'x2' tank? I was thinking (hoping) around 15-20, probably 17ish... Is that to many? I don't want to crowd them in there, do you guys think they will be happy with that many in there? Or is it too many?
Thanks. :)

Sounds like a good amount, they will school nicely :D

why are you against natural African Riverine species like Hemichromis or Pelvichromis????
If you can find me a species that is mostly brown (can't distract from the catfish), stays under 4" and comes from central Africa I'll look into it

But all the cichlids are bright and will end up becoming the mail features in the tank, and my catfish are the stars of this show. :D

*yawns* boooooooring. wake me when it's over :P

Hahaha each to their own :P
I guess...... I just don't see the point of making catfish the focus when they can get along with anything you put with them. You don't have to "designate" a focus of the tank - you just enjoy the species you like most and others will enjoy what they like most. A little color from some Jewels, Kribensis or other African riverine species will only improve the tank's overall appearance , plus I have never seen a Synodontis be aggressive towards anything but another Synodontis and definitely never saw them eat another fish. Just some food for thought

Because the catfish are cool and deserve some lime light. :D

As for them not hurting anything, since adding the other two synos to the 170ltr I've lost 3 minnows... All with bite marks taken out of them... I can only assume it was one of the new catfish that done it as everyone else got along until they were added. That instantly took anything "minnow sized" off the 'potential residents' list.

I would probably do small cichlids if I could locate some that were dull enough not to take the attention from the little fish swimming upsidedown :) I like my catfish and think a tank built around them would be awesome. :D

I highly doubt a little pair of Kribensis or Jewels would take any attention away from 11 Catfish of the same species.....
