African River Tank

Not to get in the middle of this very weird conversation but I'm thinking white driftwood should be fine in an aquarium. I've used some of our native woods before
The white wood I'm talking about is bluegum. A member of the eucalyptus family, I'm skeptical about putting it in my tank..

look it up and find out if it's safe for aquariums.... doesn't eucalyptus only come from the Eucalyptus tree? I know it is toxic and Koalas are the only animals that can digest it, but on what level I have no idea. I'm curious if "leaching" eucalyptus would have the same effect on fish that it would when ingested. I'm sure plenty of small ponds in Australia have eucalyptus or gum branches hanging into the water leaching. With no running water it would be the equivalent of a super-sized fishtank.

For instance, the Taipan has one of the most toxic venoms of all snakes, but it must go directly into the bloodstream; you could drink it's venom however and have no ill-effects from it as long as you don't have ulcers or cuts in your mouth or cavities allowing it to get into your blood

Also, wouldn't the carbon elements remove the toxins anyway if it leached into the tank?
I've looked, I can't find anyone who's used it with anything but Australian natives. I don't use carbon in my tanks, I just keep some on hand in case I need to remove meds.

I'm not attached to the fish in the streams, if I kill my fish with wood I'd never forgive myself...

And Frank, blue gum is a kind of eucalyptus tree lmaooo!!! :P

I'm sorry I thought it was another species
All good. "Blue gum" probably isn't the best description, for all I know their could be 50 different trees that all get "blue gum" as a common name. :D

We have Gum trees here in the U.S. ....I think it's just a common name thing. My point was in a small pond , if it's not fed by feeder-streams or underground spring, it is closed environment JUST like a giant fishtank ....if the fish in that pond are all healthy w/ all the overhanging tree branches and not to mention all the fallen trees and branches in the water I see no reason why it would hurt your tanks

The word that stuck out to me most in that post was GIANT, "like a GIANT fish tank.." I don't have giant fish tanks I have little ones, and I assume the effects would be worse than in a giant tank.. :D

I'd assume Australian natives would be able to tolerate whatever it leaches but I get the feeling my little synodontis probably won't be as accepting of it.. Whatever "it" may be haha

I'll just spend a fortune on goldvine for now and wait until we keep natives to use the bluegum. :)

A native Tasmanian tank would be cool. Maybe some Galaxias or your pygmy perch looks cool. I did read they are very restricted species tho

Yeah its illegal to keep Tasmanian natives because they're endangered.

They're endangered because some bright spark many many moons ago thought that releasing trout for sports fishermen was a good idea.

Do you know how they're combatting the drop in the galaxias population? They're not. Just putting thousands of stupid laws in to "protect" them, its like "if you wanted to protect them you'd try to remove the damn trout!"

Anyway I'll stop ranting or I'll be here all day lol

Says the guy who can get a 100gal tank for under 300 bucks...

100gal for you = $500 MAX
100gal for me =$1500, MIN

If we lived in America on the income we have now... Boy would my hobby be flying! :D

You don't know expensive fish keeping until you've lived here lol

Well so much for that idea. Our native fish in Hawaii(which are pretty endangered also)can be kept for personal uses(food, aquariums, etc) but cant be sold or exported.

I don't think we have any loopholes to our laws, I'm pretty sure its just "no keeping them, no catching them, no killing them" sort of thing...

I wonder if there's a loophole for aborigines, like there is with hunting mutton birds... Hmm... I'm going to look into that because I'm curious now...
