African River Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep. Looked for 4 months for a healthy looking specimin. Paid 5 dollars for a 2" fish and put him through QT, ate well (including 2 of my danios) and was fine in the 70. fairly active at times and nobody bothered him. In the past week he went on and off food and wouldn't eat before school and when I came home he was dead. Now I need to look for another one after I get floating plants
well that sucks. :(

that's exactly my 1st thought when I looked at it
Why don't you just go collect your own from Nature and save the $$$ for other stuff?????????????? I NEVER pay money for décor, it's a waste of cash. Stuff you obtain yourself from the wild looks much more natural anyway. PVC pipes are the only thing I buy because I haven't found a good spot in the wild to find them :D
Because I'm in Tasmania and the only trees that grow around here are gum and wattle trees and I don't think I should be putting bluegum in with anything other than Australian natives.

As for rocks all the rocks around here are just lumps of dirt or clay so once again, not going in my tanks, plus I like the look of the tigers eye and won't find that just bumming around my local stream lol

We're not all lucky enough to be able to just collect our décor, do you really think I'd spend hundreds of $$$ on goldvine wood if I was comfortable putting bluegum (which IMO looks nicer) in my tanks? :)

I'm going to collect river rocks as well.

Get a butterfly too. Awesome fish (Until they go off food, die and get half eaten while you are at school with 10ppm nitrate. I am wondering what happened :()
I can get three more rocks for less than the price of a butterfly fish... I'll pass. ;)

How am I acting like a girl? You know, aside from the fact that I AM a girl... :P lol

As for being a "tomboy" don't know many tomboys that scream and run at the sight of a moth... Then again I don't know many girly girls that pick up huntsman's... I have my girly moments and my not so girly moments, my hubby picks on me because I don't mind spiders and arachnids but am TERRIFIED of insects etc hahaha

lol you're a strange one, Eb

Sometimes when I talk with you, I find myself saying in my head "What a peculiar specimen, I must get it to my laboratory for further studying and dissection" lmao

I get that first bit daily from Jeff hahaha

As for dissecting me, can you at least wait until I'm dead first and leave my face in tact so I can have an opened casket? I like my face, its not the best face in the world but its the best I'm getting :D

Also you didn't answer my question, how am I acting like a girl? :P

Lol how does not being able to collect my own décor make me girly? Its not like I WANT to spend a weeks income on tree branches I just don't have much choice unless someone can show me wothout a doubt that bluegum won't leach eucalyptus or god knows what else all through my tanks.

One day we'll have a native tank, then I'll have the most beautiful white driftwood you'll ever see :D

Not to get in the middle of this very weird conversation but I'm thinking white driftwood should be fine in an aquarium. I've used some of our native woods before

look it up and find out if it's safe for aquariums.... doesn't eucalyptus only come from the Eucalyptus tree? I know it is toxic and Koalas are the only animals that can digest it, but on what level I have no idea. I'm curious if "leaching" eucalyptus would have the same effect on fish that it would when ingested. I'm sure plenty of small ponds in Australia have eucalyptus or gum branches hanging into the water leaching. With no running water it would be the equivalent of a super-sized fishtank.

For instance, the Taipan has one of the most toxic venoms of all snakes, but it must go directly into the bloodstream; you could drink it's venom however and have no ill-effects from it as long as you don't have ulcers or cuts in your mouth or cavities allowing it to get into your blood

Also, wouldn't the carbon elements remove the toxins anyway if it leached into the tank?
