Rope Fish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus) are also found in the same areas as their Polypterus cousins. And yes...the Jewel Cichlids (Hemichromis sp.) are also found in the same localities. In my personal experience, Jewel Cichlids can get pretty aggressive and territorial...even moreso than 'kribs' and can sometimes cause problems with the relatively unaggressive polypterids.
When trying to set up a 'biotope' or community tank, it should be obvious that you will have to tailor the current and adult sizes of the fish you're considering to the current and adult sizes of their potential tankmates. Polypterus ornatipinnis is certainly one of the largest (if not the largest) of the 'upper jaw' bichirs and potential tankmates will need to be chosen carefully so that they don't become menu items.
Albino P. senegalus aren't really 'man-made'...albinos are born in the wild but rarely survive for long because they're so obvious to predators. The fact that albinos are present in the fish trade is because the fish are captive-bred and thus don't have to fear much from predators that would normally pick them off quickly in their natural environment.
