Hey Guys! Fun question, would love your opinions. I 'm looking to do a true one of these two species. What do you feel are the pros and cons of the two and which one do you really feel is better pick (I know that there are multiple species of both kinds, but just general pros and cons of the two groups)? I will be starting them out in a grow out tank that is 6 feet long and three feet wide (deep) until they get bigger. Which fish do you feel is more fun and more fascinating to keep? I have never had either of these species.

I look forward to hearing from you guys!

Given the nature of this forum I'm betting nothing but ATF answers except from this guy.......

I wouldn't trade my wolf for any fish. :grinno:

You could have a pretty nice group of Tigers for what a nice Wolf costs though..... :(

lol very true, I am always hearing about tigers but almost never about wolfs. What about the wolf makes you love it so much, that is what will make my decision. Why people love the fish they have.

I can't explain it, it's just the feeling you get watching it. I've had many predatory Characins and I've never encountered one that demands respect like an Aimara. To watch a fish capable of inflicting so much damage actually interact with other fish is something you can't put a price on. To see it gain the respect of other fish without killing or hurting and seeing how other fish react to it and learn from the encounters is beyond interesting. The rays used to pounce on him, now the wolf will literally sit on the rays and they're just fine with it. A simple stare and the big knife will turn and swim away. He'll come up to the glass and stare at me and I can't help but feel intimidated, it's not just a glance it will sit and stare for several minutes, flaring it's gills if it's grumpy. It's a guard dog for a fish tank that doesn't have to bark, his blank stares are enough.... lol

Ever get over to Clear Lake IA I'd be more then happy to let you check out the fish here and you could draw your own ATF/Wolf conclusion....

ive had a total of 7 atf and ive personally loved to keep them. i am however getting a hoplias curupira in the next couple weeks. the atf are my favourite to keep in groups of 3. 2 is just trouble and one usually gets beat up eventually. 3 the aggression is spread out. ive never kept a good sized wolf so i cant really give you too much info on them but pretty soon i will. the closest thing ive had to a big wolf is a 12" erythrinus peru and he was awesome. super active and definitely claimed his spot in the tank he was in. the atf are by far one of my favourite fish to watch. they are always on the move chasing each other around. every 5 mins something exciting happens in the fish tank. thats the best part about them especially when theres other fish in there that they are darting in between.

those two fish are completely difference fish. I would compare two fish that are simalar. I am both a fan. ATF because of the teeth and aerodymamic predator built. Wolffish because of the personality and the brute strength.

It'll be much much easier for you to keep a wolf then a ATF. I was told a rainbow hi fin wolf fish (which is my profile pic, my fish) is a really great starter characin. ATF as I've heard are tough to care for, are more susceptible to low water quality, and require bigger housing.

The minimum tank size told to me for a single red wolf was 35 ga. Correct me if I'm wrong, mine is in a 60 and loving it

Also my red wolf is about as vicious as they come if you want raw aggression. The common, aimara, and black wolves are all much more aggro and can't be kept with other fish period. I keep my red wolf with a bichir and soon a peacock bass (growing out in a friends tank).

I'd agree that ATFs definitely need bigger housing....... Wolves may cost more but they're more of an ambushy pred then open water so you could get by with a much smaller tank. Seem to be more aware of surroundings, no freak outs, and better overall luck in captivity in my opinion. I'd almost compare a wolf to a puffer in the way they interact with people.

Sweet! Thanks a lot for your responses guys! DB junkie, I would totally take you up on your offer would love to see your Aimara
