I feel for the most part, barring a few species, that all african cichlids look exactly the same. Thats why I find them boring. Big fan of frontosas though.
I have never had Africans, but would have to agree Frontosas do look really cool!

I think the best part is that they DON'T react to my presence, they just go about with what they do. More of a natural habitat type of thing.

This is the main difference between the two. Africans seemed to take longer to get settled in, hid a lot at first whenever someone approached tank.
Really just boils down to preference of personality.

Just curious: Why do you all think Africans are boring? I've had my 90g mbuna for a couple of years and I can watch them for hours. I think the best part is that they DON'T react to my presence, they just go about with what they do. More of a natural habitat type of thing.
You are giving the answer to your own question, a reason people like american cichlids is their personality, the way they react when you approach the tank.

So I did end up changing my mind when I got to my LFS & went African. Ive been enjoying them so far...cant wait for them to really color up. Going to get some more tomorrow & watch them establish a pecking order.

I've always kept American cichlids, but recently lost all of my fish to disease. I now have to start over and am considering trying Africans....I love the color and the fact that I can have more, and more variety without worrying about them outgrowing my 55 gallon. But I have heard that Africans tend to be quiet boring. I have also heard conflicting arguements about mixing them...Any suggestions?

Africans or Americans!?!?!?!AMericans of course........The Africans are like a bunch of hybrid-colored-looking feeders to me.......The Americans on the other hand, are beefeier and more "pitbull".........

I keep BOTH American and African cichlids. BY far i like African cichlids better.

I;ve had Trimacs, festaes, carpintis, etc... All great fish, still have em. But I like the exotic look of Africans. WHen people come over, I get a lot more complements on my African tank.
Haps/Peacocks also tend to be more expensive than most Americans; so not the fish for the inexperienced. BTW, ppl think of Mbunas (common Petco africans) when they think Africans. Mbunas are like 20% of all Africans cichlids. You can also overcrowd tanks to curb aggression; very common practice.

Here's a couple good vids of a Hap/Peacock tank:
