hmmm the impression that i got about afro aro was that it did not eat fish ... in light of this new information i might have to consider getting afro to complete the collection but man ... the look

fish are fish, if they feel comfortable swimming in small tank and not jump, leave him there until he's suited for a bigger tank. I suggest that don't keep moving your fish from tank to tank when it's not ready because you can stress the fish out and kill him.
This is what I had read about Afrowanas too. However, I have seen videos of them eating feeders (some really large) and large shrimps etc etc. So, I am guessing that these guys are not exclusively "filter feeders".
Also, whether or not an Aro (or any fish) tries to eat it's tankmates depends on some extent to the temperament of the specific fish. My (14") Silver Aro is (at least as of now) completely docile towards the (3"-4") Pearl Gourami in his tank.
(I know the Gourami aren't going to last very long and I plan to move them to one of my other tanks soon.)
Anyway, Afrowanas look really unique. I am considering adding one with my Silver Aro and FL Gars.
