After A Year Tank Still Looks Terible

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I just said $400 because I always wanted a metal halide, but I have to remember it's not gonna be major coral tank maybe just a few corals...then again maybe one of those few corals want a lot of light lol

Also what is a ballast and is it needed?

Scopas tang looks cool, but I'm afraid of ick....but guessing with a QT I should be fine.

Hey what do you guys think of this list:

-Green Bird Wrasse (Currently Have)
-Marron Clown (Currently Have)
-Domino Dmasel (Currently Have)
-Tiger Watchmen Goby
-Sail Fin Algae Blenny
-3-5 Chromis (Blue Green)
-Yellow or Bicolor Goat Fish
-Blue or Regal Tang

The tank is a 72 gallon, fluval fx5 filter and will soon be purchasing a aquac remora..

I don't know if the list is good or not compatible wise or in to much of a small sized tank.

Also I'm open to more ideas, clown gobies I think are too small lol, scopas tang looks ok, but I would prefer a brighter color.

Inverts:

-Coral Banded Shrimp (Don't know how will do with the wrasse)
-Cleaner Shrimp (Don't know how will do with wrasse)
-Assorted Hermits (Have)
-Purple Pincushion Urchin (Have)
-Brittle Starfish(Have)
-Small Horse Shoe Crab (Have)

The only thing that you would use for reef lighting that doesnt require a ballast is LEDs. LEDs use a power supply and a driver. Sometimes you can use an unregulated power supply and a resistor, but thats a good way to shorten the life of the LED.

Ballast controls the voltage (sometimes ramping it up to near 20k volts, depending on lighting type) to ignite a gas. All of them that I know of have a two stage/phase ignition process that use a solid first during the warm up stage (typically mercury or sodium) and then the gas ignites.

Seems to me to be a little much on the stocking. I would eliminate something. Maybe the chromis, or something else to keep the bioload down a bit.

Thanks Heathd for the info on ballasts,

I'm guessing I can take off the chormis.

So how does it look now?

-Green Bird Wrasse (Currently Have)
-Marron Clown (Currently Have)
-Domino Dmasel (Currently Have)
-Tiger Watchmen Goby
-Sail Fin Algae Blenny
-Yellow or Bicolor Goat Fish
-Blue or Regal Tang

I also probably introduce one fish at a time every week or two while changing the rocks each time.

However the fish will be added after I get rid of the miniatus grouper I have right now and when I save some $$$

The tang, for now seems like it would work since it will probably be 2-3 inches, but once it grows up it going to be cramped. Still sounds like a heavy bioload too, but I also like to stock a little on the light side.

Hey thanks for the info guys, looks like no corals for now until I save for a better light fixture. Does anyone keep jackknife fish in thier tanks? I always like them, but if a tang is gonna be cramped then know jack unless thier less active?

Update: I removed the grouper yesterday and he is in a spare tank, QT. Now waiting for my damsel and green bird to heal thier fins and possibly adding another fish.....

I'll probably have another 2-3 weeks to plan a bullet proof list. Any recommened stock list that you would personally do
(if you want don't have to include the fish I already have) Thanks

Hey also regal not the angelfish the blue tang with yellow belly

Hey update:

In my aquarium I have:

3 firefish at 2 inches
1 maroon clown at 3 inches
1 green bird wrasse (So far hasen't been bothering anything) at 4-6inches
1 convict tang (A random birthday gift from my cousin...may get to big) at 4inches
3 chromis at 1/2 to an inch

So far water parameters are all good,

maybe giving away bird wrasse, to help my goal for a reef tank with peaceful fish...i love the color green on him :( sad he might have to leave.

Btw pics, i will try to post up...i have difficulties finding my camera lol...is thier away to post it through an iphone? If anyone knows how, it would be great to know.
