"These gentle animals suffer from respiratory ailments because they breathe in exhaust fumes, and they develop debilitating leg problems from walking on hard surfaces. In some cases, horses have even dropped dead from heatstroke after working in scorching summer heat and humidity"

dude, seriously, do you know how many PEOPLE "drop dead from heatstroke", "suffer from respiratory ailments" and "debilitating leg problems" due to city life? maybe the issue here is not that horses are subjected to these conditions, but that EVERYONE in the city suffers the same thing? maybe instead of trying to shut down an industry, we should be focusing on cleaning up the environment, so that NO ONE has to suffer these conditions.

Thats pretty obvious, no? I think most people who aren't around that would be disgusted with it. Its completely a matter of opinion, and its pretty clear that its not exactly easy on the animals. And they are being killed for what? Your enjoyment? C'mon...

Thats the problem here, they aren't being checked on or taken care of responsibly. People are getting hurt, and its all in the name of personal pleasure. If it can't be done right, should it be done at all?
if that is the case then i can see someone should and has to intervene.. horses should have all the things nessasary to keeping them comfortable and healthy.. and not overworked... but i just don't want them to go away because their are so many now uncared for by private owners out of work , from foreclosures etc etc.....all those horses are doomed because there are only so many that these adoption/rescue places can handle.. i wish peta would stick to building animal sanctuaries.. and actually support and help owners in need... instead of wiping out the industry..those horses need days off... grazing hang out time.. those are the things they should address...

tell that to the Amish that live in my country. IMO there is nothing wrong with giving a horse-or any animal a good workout-provided you give them breaks, shade, water, good food and rest.

PETA needs to be dissolved-they are a joke.

when are they going to fight for truly abused animals?

Thats what i say.... do something where it really counts..after you finish that then work on the other stuff..

Hmm most Percherons that have worked with harnesses on lived to see their 25th bday and retired. Two of mine in 20's...all muscle and healthy.

They aren't necessarily getting the things you mention....thats the idea here. Its likely they illegitimately are being abused.

They may not be so far off with this. I was just reading for an enviro planning class about the orgins of autos and mass transit. Horses were posing a problem with their waste, and dropping dead from being overworked. So this isn't a new concept...and if their statistics are true then something should be done.

this is the point i was trying to make...if its bad for horses, then its just as bad, if not worse for the people in the same area as the horses

"According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 384 people die from heat every year. This is more than the deaths caused by floods (135), lightning (85), tornadoes (73), and hurricanes (25) combined. Heat can be especially deadly in large urban areas that can become heat islands. Brick buildings, asphalt streets, and tar roofs store heat and radiate is like a slow burning furnace. Temperatures can be several degrees hotter in the city than in nearby suburbs and rural areas. In these situations, the elderly, infants, and young children, and people with chronic health problems are most at risk."
