pretty much have a separate contained or tank with a heater and a powerhead, just add tap and declor, then let it "age" for a few days before you do the water change.

unless you have chloramines you dont add any declor when you age... the chlorine will gas off over 24 hours...

what is the benefits of ageing the water

its more risky if you ask me

a load of contaminates could get into the water when you are ageing it

fish keeping should be made as easy as possible by filling up containers then filling the tank from the containers you are doing the water change twice

if you have all the containers all filled up and ageing for you next water change and you have to do an emergency water change or 2 where do you get the extra water from if its from the tap then then whats the point in ageing in the 1st place

ageing water is for the old school fish keeper i hate to tell them things have moved on and with the amount of water changes rays need just forget it

rays are not as sensitive as people make out the temp drop causes no problems

adding water from the tap has no effect on breeding, feeding or health of the rays so why bother

aged in a 100 gal rubbermaid stock tank for min 24 hours, filtered with purigen and carbon ,heated....My water supply is the missouri river, levels of added chemical levels by the city water dept flucuate, plus it's liquid rock ..

AVG Tap water readings published by dept of water...

AVG for 2008 in ppm

cyanide .2
Chorlamine 2.3 (as high as 2.88) - 2007 high was 2.59
GH 99
KH 37
PH 9.7
AMM .22
Sodium 40.4
Nitrate 1.74 up to 4
Sulfate 124
plus they use some additive to reduce calcium carbonate in order to reduce scale build up in pipes

prime and add tap i also have a whole house carbon filtration and ssoft wter on my house never had an issue and rays have breed many times like this

i use a HMA filter, just turn it on and fill the tank direct from that. at the moment it runs at 3liters every 2 mins so it take ages! but ill have a couple of water butts in the yard soon so that will be on constant fill so i will have large amounts of water when ever needed.

my 40% WC on my 5ft tank takes around 4 hrs at the moment lol.

My ray seems to get agitated whenever I do water changes. Usually do 25-30% once a week and also add a small amount of small amount of salt along with the prime. Salt is diluted in a bucket prior to adding. Figured others might have a similar experience but judging by the responses maybe not.

maybe a ph difference?

I was under the impression that rays are quite hardy/adaptable when it comes to ph changes though . The only other thing I can think of is that she gets agitated from me being around the tank since it's in the basement, so there's not much activity going on down there.

Rays do NOT like PH fluctuations.
