Ageneiosus marmoratus grow out thread.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I finally caved and got him some rosy reds. Just so he had something in his stomach, his wound has healed and he is more active, ill update with more pics soon.

TBTB: to answer your question from the other thread, the cat got about a nickle sized wound on his side, I originally suspected that a poly bit him but after further inspection it appears that he might have just grazed it on some driftwood. I ended up separating him from the rest of the fish and dosing the whole tank with melafix and salt. It was amazing how fast it healed, only took like 4 days and hes back to normal.

Thanks. Sorry, I made you say it twice. I apologize. I have not looked up this thread. It's extra work and I guess I got lazy :)

These guys do best in groups. I had 5 and they would rip all over the tank in a frenzy at feeding time. Mine would eat like crazy until it looked like they swallowed a golf ball. I've kept them singly and in a group and they were much more active in a group.
Growth rate was very slow after 9". Mine took about a full year to go from 9" to 12"
The prices you guys are talking about are crazy. I got 4 for $120 at about 5-6". Larger ones at 9-10" $50-60.
I kept one alone with other predators, and when I added the other four it was a good change. These guys are nocturnal, but seemed very confident in a group and cruised around during the day regularly.
Nice pickup and good luck with him/her.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that these fish love current. They would swim against the out takes for hours.

Wow, thatnks for the response. I do wish that I could get more but when I got to tge lfs there was only two left, one with a deformed fin and this guy. Did you get your group off of live? Im trying to get him on pellets but hes got no interest... I cant comment on the price but im happy with my purchase and I think the price was fair. Thanks!

You're welcome.
You can keep one no problem, I just found that they were more active in a group.
If you see him swimming in the current, especially after lights out, drop the food right in front of his nose and they're instinct will tell them to snap it up. I started off feeding silversides, prawn, and krill. Mine went crazy for silversides and other frozen fish. I didn't have any issues feeding frozen food. Mine did take a few days to settle in before they would eat though.

How big was/is your tank, Bottles? Snookn21 has kept his pair of 10"-ers in an 80 gal and two times he got trouble (after having kept them fine for some time, weeks, months) - once one guy beat up the other to half-death, second time one had the other (of the same size) half-way in his mouth. I am thinking it must be the tank size?

Space could be a factor; tank is 180g. A pair may be more likely to fight than a pack, as mine would school together, often lined up in front of the spraybar. Tankmates were 3x 5" Jaguar Cats, 3x 10" Channa Lucius, 14" Channa Pleurophthalma, 7-8" Chrysichthys Ornatus, 14" Ornate Bichir, 15" Weeksii Bichir, and 10-11" Endlicheri Bichir. The only fighting that I ever saw in the tank was the Chrysichthys Ornatus took a Jaguar Cats whole head in his mouth, and the Jag was honking until he was let go. Otherwise it was a pretty peaceful community. I never saw the Ageneiosus Marmoratus attack eachother or others. I had that combo for roughly 4 years.
