How long will it take the ripped up tail to heal in your experience?

Depends on how fast the fish heals, when i bought one of my black volta endli it had a split tail, it had a gap between the tail, took 2-3 months for it to grow back, do alot of water change to help it heal faster.

wow! Wonderful aquascaping! Great pics. Especially love the butterflies. Checkers has a great name too! Like the ropefish hanging from the plants too.

We sort of named Checkers tongue-in-cheek. I like the cute little name. He's a killer though! But I think he's super cool. You should get one too! You don't have any small Tetras right?
