I considered bare bottom. I currently have pool filter sand. I actually vacuumed out most of it so I just have a very very thin layer at the bottom now. So that it doesn't actually even cover the entire bottom of the tank. I have a few terra-cotta pots and the thin layer of pool filter sand and it works great!
My Jaguar moves the sand all over and there are a few bare areas that he has cleared. I actually like the look of the sand not entirely covering the bottom. It makes poo less obvious, but you don't have vacuuming to hassle with. I don't have to dig into the substrate any more.
