hey guys, i just recently switch my filtration over to the FX5 from the aqua style pump that hangs on the back of the tank.

It seems the fish are starving for air... their gills open up really big since i have switched over, am i supposed to put in a air pump? if so, is it possible to get a extremely quiet one?

Any info would be great

thanks
Douglas

Is the output on the filter breaking the water surface which I'm sure it does. How long ago was this change. Also when you changed filters did you take out the filter media from the old filter and put it in the new one.

the output of the filter is coming out nearer to the bottom of the tank. so i guess no it would not break the surface. or do you mean does the hose come through the surface? i guess then it would. The old filter was a size C flat lined filter. There is now way it could go into the media section of the FX5.

any information would be great

Well if your not getting any water breaking on the top of the water then your fish are not getting enough oxygen. The easiest and cheapest fix to that would be to put the outtake at the top of the tank like it shows in the video and instruction book. All you would have to do is pull your hose back up. Your other options are adding a airstone or a powerhead towards the surface. What ever you decide I would pull the filter outtake hose up like now and in a little while you should see your fish responding and breathing at a slower rate.

maybe it has to do with the fx5 change. no bacteria colony on the filter

I was thinking the same thing thought I mentioned it in my last post but I guess I didn't. Anyways to the OP you said your water stats are fine what are they? What test kit are you using and how long ago did you do the filter change. If you just swapped filters then your tank is cycling again!

i will have to take another look at the install video. so as long as the output of the filter breaks the water it should be ok for oxygen now? i have one of the outputs flipping some of the water on the top up now. so its making a little noise. is there a air pump that is actually quiet? i have one now but its extremely noisy

i did the filter change only a few days ago so yes it is still cycling. But even after it has cycled, will the output need to break the water for the air problem?
