Technically a growout works if you know you will have the means to get them the larger housing by the time that they will need it.... I did the same thing, where I got fish when I had a tank they couldn't live in for life, and upgraded as they grew... it works fine as long as you know for sure that you will be able to provide for them as they grow. I got big cats before I had my 300g and pool, but it was ok, cause I ended up getting the tank by the time they would need it. Theres no use having a huge tank for 3" fish. put two 4" channels in a 300g tank or pond, and they are going to get lost, and its going to be harder to care for them, theres alot of space for them to cover searching for food...

I got from his original post that he does not yet have the means to purchase the proper house when the fish will need it. As I'm sure you know, there are a bunch of more appropriate fish for a 29. A couple of pictus would give much the charm of channels without the ability to grow larger than the tank. When it becomes clear that the tank will actually be purchased, instead of some dream (I know cause I had these dreams when I was a younger hobbiest, and sometimes now), then go ahead and start the "grow out" process.
Also, a few 3in long cats in a 100 would only be unappealing to the hobbiests eye, not the catfish. Fish find food in acres of territory in the wild. I'm sure they would be able to do the same in a few square feet.

dont pictus cats need brakish water when they get like 5" long tho???

thats a good idea....i think ill get them BUT for now ill keep the albinos and grow them out becase my friend is getting a HUGE aquarium( like around 300-500 gallons) and ill give them to him. also and tips on raising pictus cats?

Are you sure its okay with your friend about give channel catfish to him? What if he dont want stuck with these problematic catfish for forever? You just cant force your friend to take these catfish off your hands. Like i say, always think ahead and making future plans before getting monster fish, thats my advice.

But i got an idea. Once the albino channel catfish reach a foot long, you can ask Bass Pro to take them and put them into display tank. Sure they look weird in natural tank being white fish around the natural looking fishes.

Bass Pro most likely won't take them. Make sure that your bud will take the fish. These cats can get really big, big enough that they would limit even what he puts in a 300 gal or more. I've caught them over 2 feet long know they get much bigger in the wild, over 40 pounds in some cases. Generally smaller in captivity but still can be over 2 feet.

Pictus are a fairly easy active fish to raise. They will take about any good fish food, even coming to the surface to munch. They are also quick to recognize their keeper and will "beg" for food. Mix it up a bit and feed them some krill and blood worms once in a while and you'll have some happy active fish. Don't try put them in with fish much smaller though, they tend to munch away on tetras and smaller barbs.
Wait until you get another tank or get rid of the albinos before you pick up some pictus cats. Good luck.

Yeah i know but that was just an idea about give albinos to the Bass Pro. But first You need to ask your buddy about it. If he dont want then ask Bass Pro to see if they can take your albinos in. That was just an idea. Or take these albino channel cats back to the stores right now and get pictus...

well then bass pro will be plan b but my friend i can almost gaurntee will take them becuase channel cats are his FAVORITE fish ever and he love my albinos so he should take them...and could i put 3 pictus in a 20 gallon long tank untill i get rid of the catfish?(they will go into the 200 gal pond this summer) so they wouldnt be in the 20 for long would this work? thank you for your input

A 20 long for a few pictus would be ok for a bit, as long as this is a different tank than the one that holds the channels (think you said that was a 29).

ya the channels r in a 29 o and would some 1 inch sunfish be ok with the pictus?
