Alcohol and Fish

If it's your house, you should be able to set the rules. Just don't let people place their drinks on your tank. Unless you are having a party with a bunch of immature people that can't handle their liqour this shouldn't be a problem. But in the case that someone does contaminate your tank with alcohol, do a quick water change and hope that it is the last water change of the night.

I wouldn't worry about it. as long as it doesn't happen multiple times the fish will be no worse for wear but you may have a bacterial bloom from the alcohol.

by the way im assuming this tank is atleast 50 gallons

well i would would make sure that no one could open it by using tape, rope, whatever. then i would position myself near the tank use a bb gun to scare away anyone who might poor their beverage in my tank

If you are worried about people accidentally pouring alcohol in your tank, then you should be even more worried about them being drunk enough to fall into and break your tank.

If you are worried about people purposely pouring alcohol in your tank, then you should consider getting new friends.

i've thought about this before. It sounds like you're gonna have some people over that you don't know that well. If you are really really concerned I would get pieces of cardboard and tape it to the sides of the tank that are not facing the wall. I would tape it so it goes above the height of the tank at least 4 feet so people cant see or reach over the top. Right below where you taped the cardboard tape bed sheets to cover the rest of the glass and down to the floor. Keep the light off in the tank to not attract attention. It will look funny but you are less likely to have your tank poisoned.

Thanks for all the response! For those concerned I'm not having a raging college party, just some of my and housemates friends but I'm just preping for the worst cuz you never know. Well since there are not products to remove alcohol I'll just have to keep an eye out and maybe I'll use one or two of the methods listed above. I especially liked the responce about usinga BB gun to keep folks away!

actualy alcohol is a sterilizer if anything it would trash your biofilter.

that being said it does biodegrade after a while and unless you pour more than like several gallons of beer into the tank it won't do sh*t to your fish or biological filtration.

Alot of these people claiming get new friends are pretty ridiculous...

You don't want to spend an entire party guarding your tank.

I had my tanks all through college and had 2 occasions of alcohol being dropped into the tank before I caught on. Covering the tank seemed to perk the curiousity of every drunk person in the room. And I had no ill effects from the alcohol being in the tank for a few hours as the empty glasses/cans were discovered after the parties. so it was in the tank for several hours. just did a near 90% water change after, pretty sure the water change stressed my fish more than the alcohol.

I ended up just turning the lights of the tanks out and lining heavy candles and other pain in the butt things to move on the canopies. Worked for the remaining years of school.

Ah I remember when my best friend came over and we had few drinks (maybe too many) and he tried give a beer to my blood parrot (the oldest one) then he tried feed the blood parrot with what he thought was an earthworm....hes lucky that I was thinking about get a pair of RBP but after this I better have a drunken buddy-proof fish....oh by way the blood parrots are all fine just feel hangover next morning.
