Alewifes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
as stated before, not a good fish for a tank, skittish, will crash into the side of any not round tank, ever seen sardines or herring in a tank in an aquarium, always in a round tank so they can school and run in a pack like they do naturally. Difficult to handle and catch. Best used as bait, I know out here in MD we bait our crab pots with them and that's it.

it appears you already have your mind made up, however. At least be sure to use them as bait for something after you kill them...

Y shouldnt i try it?

Whats a few alewifes out of the millions in the great lakes gonna hurt? If they die, then they die then i wont keep them no more. big deal

Why do you come here looking for input if you're not going to take it? The hobby is not about taking any old fish and keeping it just for sh#ts and giggles, its about the proper husbandry of another living thing. Obviously you're going to do what you want and think what you want despite the advice from veteran fishkeepers who know what they're talking about. You don't have what it takes to keep these fish, you don't even have what it takes to keep the fish you have going by your signature. This hobby is a lot more rewarding when done right.

That was so icy cold harsh, bro. These fish are not just some items that you can threw them away. You have been on the forum for long time than I do, yet you failed to realize that this hobby is not about have a fish in a tank, it's about how to take care of your fish properly and healthier.

Oh by way, I don't understand why you want raise your fish to the adulthood size then threw them in your pond for just fishing them? Even after these years of hardworking and put lots of efforts into these fish you raised...that's what I dont understand at all.

have you kept alewifes? do you know or are you just making assumtions? If you have then lets see pic. if you havnt then dont judge me

Some people have kept them in past and already researched on the shadkeeping in aquariums...turn out that the shads sucks in the aquariums. But you were out of line, man. And dont blame on us for judging you, you did to yourself.

no no i understand but gosh, ive kept gizzard shad in the past and feed them tropical fish flakes had them for a few weeks in a 10 gal tank with a divider then one day they slipped to the other side and the baby bass of the same size killed them

And did you learned about why your gizzard shad slipped the divider? These shads (any species of american shads) are pelagic fish, mean they likes to roaming around the waterways. If you dont have any room for a group of fragile pelagic fish then do not try it out.

they will be in there own tank

Yes but at what size and how gallons of your tank have? Is this tank round? If you don't have proper tank then I would forget about alewife idea and try other interesting species out. That is called common senses. It seems that you dont want to listen to the advaced experts but then its only me.
