Alewifes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You cant use a cast net, you'll strip them of scales
Also how are you gonna get them to your tank? Guarentee they beat the snot out of themselves on the side of the container before you get them 1/2 way home.

have you kept alewifes? do you know or are you just making assumtions? If you have then lets see pic. if you havnt then dont judge me

The state agency that I work for has a public aquarium on the coast, open during the summer. They have tried to keep alewives with limited success in 1000 gal round tanks with flow through sea water. The alewives are collected in late spring, and by august they are starving. The aquarium staff have gotten some alewives to eat frozen cyclopeeze, but that isn't enough to sustain them.

Come down of the mountain people!

The guy wants to try and keep some alwifes and is asking advice on what he needs to do it properly and all anyone wants to do is flame him for wanting to experiment and learn!

Constructive advice so far
  1. Large round tank
  2. Pelagic (no obstacles to swimming)
  3. Handle gently
  4. Collect small specimens only
  5. A shoal or large school required
  6. Large supply of natural zoo plankton as food
We've all killed a few fish along the way to becoming competant fish keepers. Who are we to say to someone else that they are'nt allowed to make the same mistakes in the persuit of expertise.

Who knows, he may be successful and lead the way for the rest of us interested in similar species.
