My pond is green and I already have a good bio filter. The pond is in the sun most of the day.....what solutions other than the uv filter are there? I really don't want to have to put chemicals in it all the time :(

Thanks for the quick response
how much do I need for a 1000 gallon pond....and how long does it work before you need new straw?

could this just be "spring" algae and get better with time????
I forgot to mention that my pond is not stocked heavily

Yes grasshopper, give it some time....
The algae is just part of the spring and fall cycle. Do you have a thermometer? If not, go get one right now.

The barley will disolve the string algae in a few weeks so long as the water temps. are above 55*. Above 60* and your golden, since most plants (marginals and lillies)will be absorbing and outcompeting the algae for nutrients. After 60* you can add Lettuce to the pond and Hyacinths in the filter that will keep any more algae outbreaks down to nil. In the fall the furry stuff will return, but good maintenace will lessen the stuff the following year.

Make sure the bio is seeded and remove any organic matter that is on the bottom. A water change of 40-50% is a way to lower the pollutants in the water in the mean time til temps. get a little warmer. Trust me, once the water temps. are constantly above 50 deg. with 55-60 being the magic numbers, the nusiance algae will disapper and not come back til fall.

I use Aquascape S.A.B for barley when temps. are right. I use a cold water BB for now to make sure the bio-filter is seeded once the barley is used. It contains barley and BB that will then breakdown the algae once it falls to the bottom of the pond. I like to net or sweep the bottom of my pond during barley doses daily or every other day. The first week will be 2-3 applications with follow-up of one dose in 10-14 days. You can then dose every few weeks since the SAB contains many forms of BB and enzymes that will help maintain awesome water quality. I add it once a month in the summer as routine maint.

No AlgaeFix or other chemicals....

Plants, plants, more plants and patience.

thanks for the great info :headbang2

Interesting as mine water is dark green with algae. Just so I'm not confused. String algae is or is not what is turning the water dark green?

Barley straw or barley extract will help. Have you cleaned the pond bottom this spring? Could be nutrient overload. Water plants will kick in as the water warms and will take up nutrients faster than algae. My neighbor uses a beach umbrella to shade her pond from the afternoon sun.
